WELLINGTON.

September 20. Earl Kimberly has cabled to tbe Government stating that the American Government intend sending a party to New Zealand for the purposed of taking observations of the transit of Venus, and asks that facilities would be given them to do so. The Government have replied that every facility and all information in their poasession would certainly be given to the Americans. The following telegram has been received by tbe Marine Department: "The ketch Emerald grounded in port yesterday, and filled. Her deck load of timber has been landed. She is on her beam ends, the ma&ts being outwards, and there is no room for steamers till she it righted. Efforts are being made to right her and float her up tbe beach." Tbe appearance of the comet, which was clearly visible at 2 o'clock yesterday, created considerable excitement. It was a most brilliant object, even to the naked eye, when from the shadow of any building shutting off the sun. Dr. Hector states that it was within five degrees of the sun, and rapidly approaching it. He has observed it nightly since the 11th instant, and he expects that it will get round the sun to-day, when the sun also crosses the equator, being the equinox. After getting round the sun its course will be towards the northern hemisphere, and it will not be visible here after sunset. Dr. Hector says the head Btrongly resembles the engravings of i)onaot's comet; the tail is short, but very fan-like. A little girl named Gertude Windsor, aged two years, was run over by a fish cart yesterday. The wheel parsed over her Deck, and death was almost instantaneous. .;.'
