Mr John Stevens, who defeated Sir William Fox in the contest for the Ranaritikei seat, ia a member of the firm of Stevens and Gorton, the owners of the Waihi station, Wairoa.
A proposal is on foot to bring Waipawa under the operation of tbe Town Districts Act, and a pnblic meeting will in all probability be held there afc an early date to discuss the question.
The Napier Fire Brigade corps, having received direct from London a quantity of fireworks, intend celebrating Christmas eve by a grand pyrotechnic display, to take place afc about 9 o'clock on the 24th instant afc the Fire Bricade station.
Afc the termination of the case in the Supreme Court yesterday, Sutton v. Douedas, Mr Sutton was warmly congratulated by his friends uDon having successfully " pulled off the triple event," as the election, the marriage of Miss Sutton, and the law suit, are facetiously termed.
Loch Lomond has been scratched for the Hastings Boxing Day Hurdle Race. Ihp reason for Loch Lomond being scratched was, we understand, in consequence of tha owner being dissatisfied with the weights when declared. Loch Lomond was also scratched for the Petane Handicap on similar grounds.
On the conclusion of the distribution of prizes yesterday afc the Napier district school, the pupils presented Mr Thomson, the head master, with a Parian marble statuette; Mr Murray, the second master, with a set of gold studs and sleeve links, and Mrs Stanley and Miss Robofctom with handsome testimonials.
The two ventilating pipes sticking up on the beach opposite tho Hawke's Bay Club, and which are known by the names of " Peppercorne and Burly," have been protected from the surf by a close boarded ience. It is understood that an inscription is to be painted upon ifc in English and in Maori, " Sacred to the memory of £4000."
At the request of a large number of the public, the committee of the Hawke's Bay Racing Club have decided to postpone their Boxing Diy race meeting at Pakowhai, until Tuesday, 27th insfc. This is considered to be a wise alteration, as ifc will obviate any conflicting with the race meeting to be held afc Hastings on the 26th.
The committee of the Tararua relief fund have wound up their affairs in connection therewith. The total receipts were £170 13s 7d, of which £100 was from the Union Company. The following was the distribution :—Port Chalmers cases, £111 14s (the only oases of real want); Dunedin, £14 3s 9d ;" Wellington, £12 10s ; Oamaru, £7 2s ; Auckland, £6 ; Gore, £2 10s ; advertising expenses, £15 13s 9d.
A meeting of the creditors of Messrs Combs and Co., drapers, was held at the Supreme Court House yesterday afternoon. The deed made conveying the property of the estate to Messrs W. Cato and J. V. Brown was not assented to, but in lieu a resolution was passed by the creditors and representatives present that the estate be assigned to Messrs Cato, Kettle, and Banbury. A new deed will therefore be prepared, and a meeting called for assenting to the came.
Private letters from Mr H. S. Tiffen, who is now in the south of France " in search of sunshine,'' state he had a severe attack of illness while crossing America, brought on by drinkintr impure water in a town in which he was compelled to stay through some accident on the railway. His medical attendants, however, were proficients in the art of healing, and he left their hands in as irood a Rtate of health as he ever was in his life. Mr Tiffen, who intends bringing back with him a large number of relatives, intends leaving England for this colony by the June mail.
There was a poor attendance afc Professor Fraser's lecture on " Love, Courtship, and Marriage," last evening, bufc notwithstanding the lecturer gave hia hearers the same consideration as if the building had been filled. The usual phrenological examination of several nominees elected from the audience concluded tbe programme. Professor Fraser announced that on Sunday evening he would deliver a lecture on the ' Religion of Phrenology.' A small charge will be made for defraying expense.-*, and should there be any surplus, it will be handed over to the hospital.
It seems that even a lawyer may occasionally be taken by surprise. At the Supreme Court yosterdav, during the hearing of the civil case Barker v. Rees, the defendant expressed surprise when Mr Barker's counsel, in stating hia case, produced a document containing an admission on the part of Mr Rees that he owed £-155 of the amount claimed. The defendant's
explanation, that he " had forgotten this circumstance until Mr Barker's counsel was good enough to bring it to his mind," was quite as amusing as Mr Travers' reply that " he htew it would take Mr Rees by surprise, and therefore he had thought it only right to mention it."
The annual installation of W.M. and investiture of officers of the Abercon Lodge, I*l3, K.C., took place in the lodge-room, Waipawa, on Thursday evening la.st. There was a good attendance of the brethern present. The installation ceremony was performed by Bro. P. M. Beilby, of the Heretaunga Lodge, assisted by Bros. Wundrum, P.M., and Jos. Chicken, P.M., after which Bro. H. J. Baker, the W.M. elect, invested the following officers :—Bro L. 1). Bickerton.S.W.; Bro. B. B. Johnson, J.W.; Bro. W. Goldsmith, S.C; Bro. G. Francis, J.D.; Bro. Alex. Todd, Treasurer; Bro. J. H. Weaver, Secretary; Bro. J. Nicholson, 1.G.; and Bro. C. Grenside, Tyler. A supper which had been laid in the ante-room was next nesotiated, and the brethern separated at an early hour, having spent a most enjoyable evening.
In an article on Colonial affairs, the Glasgow Herald says :—" New Zealand has of late been quickly and surely recovering from a orice- wretched state of insolvency, and will become a very flourishing Colony if car George Grey iaprevented from ruining it —as he was fa«t doing until the reins were taken from his wasteful hands. 1 ' Writers in every clime and country where the English language is spoken are almost unanimous in their verdict that !Sir George Grey is the stumbling block in the path of New Zealand's prosperity.
The admixture known as Udolpho Wolfe's Schiedam Aeojiatio Schnapps was not thrown'upon the market, like a crude and illy-compounded drug, to do its work well or indifferently, as the case may be. Ifc was the carefully and skillfully prepared medicine of a conscientious proprietor who, like'one inspired with a mission, felt that he was to repair certain ailments affecting mankind and gave ifc to the world after every ingredient had been sedulously and thoroughly tested.—[Aevt.]
