THE GENERAL ELECTION.
CAPTAIN POSTER AT NAPIEE.
Captain Porter arrived in town yesterday afternoon, and in the evening met at the Criterion Hotel a few of the electors resident in Napier whose names are on the East Coast roll, these gentlemen having been communicated with by circular. Captain Porter said he deemed it a courtesy due to the electors residing here to give "them an opportunity of questioning him on those points upon which they were not quite certain of his opinions. In answer to questions that were then put, Captain Porter said he was opposed to any alteration of the Education Act; ho was resolved upon getting a breakwater for GHsborne if possible,°but he would further all efforts that might be made to secure a harbor for Napier ; he would work in harmony with the Hawke's Bay members • he considered it only fair that districts deriving no benefit from railways should have their share of public money expended in the opening up of the country by roads. The electors, having thanked Captain Porter, withdrew.
