The Standard states that the attention of Parliament next session will be devoted to the amendment of the laws relating to the government of counties, and the expediency of altering the laws and practice of Parliament with regard to obstruction.
Owiag to rioting in Clare, a market town in King's County, Ireland, the military and constabulary stationed in that county haye been reinforced. The harvest returns of America for this year show a decrease in the wheat yield of one hundred million bushels compared with the yield last year. An earthquake in Switzerland caused much alarm amoDg the inhabitants. The Greek troops have entered and occupied Volo, a seaport town in Thessnly which province was lately ceded by Turkey to Greece. There great rejoicings on the part of the inhabitants on the entry of the troops. A decisive battle bas taken place in Algeria between the French troops and the insurgent Arabs, in which the latter were completely routed. A quantity of dynamite on board the steamer Glasgow at Bristol exploded, and nine persons were killed. Great injury was done to the ship. Sara Bernhardt, the actress, is ill.
The tariff convention sitting at Chicago are stronly in favour of a protectionist policy. The Australians resident in London have decided to present a testimonial to Lord Mayor McArthur, in recognition of the interest he has always manifested in regard to the Australian colonies. Another agragrian outrage has been perpetrated ia Kerry, Ireland. Five person? broke into a house and half murdered a farmer for paying his rent. A similar outrage has occurred at Cork. Austria ia increasing her import duties for protective purposes. An attempt has been made to assassinate the Deputy Lieutenant in Westmeath, who was fired at twice, but fortunately escaped without injury.
