November 14
The Court room on Saturday was densely crowded, several ladies being amongst those present. Te Whiti and Tohu were clad in the ordinary brown Government blankets. The former, however, had a shawl under it, and a bunch of flowers in his hand. Tohu took no notice of the crowd that was around him, although several pressed eagerly forward to see the prisoners. Te Whiti occasionally turned bis head to look at those who had assembled. After Hiroki had been removed from the dock, and marched under escort to the gaol, Te Whiti was tried under tbe information of C. W. Hurethouse that he (Te Whiti) had on certain days named used language which was likely to disturb the peace of the district. The information ia of great length. Mr Standish asked for an adjournment till 2 o'clock, and the Resident Magistrate, in granting the adjournment, said it would be necessary for the evidence to be taken down in Maori and in English, which Mr Standish said he would see should be done. Te Whiti and Tohu were then remanded till 2 o'clock, and conveyed back to the gaol in a cart. The Taranaki Volunteer Eifles (foot), in charge of Captain Ellis, marched in from Pungarehu (thirty rnilee) yesterday, arriving in New Plymouth about 8 o'clock last night. Tbe corps was met at tbe town boundary by the band, who played them in. The streets were crowded, an'l the volunteers were loudly cheered as they were marching to the centre of tbe town, where they halted. Major Btapp then addressed them, saying he was authorised by the Hon. Mr Bryce to thank them in the name of the colony for their services, and he announced that they were relieved from active service after that night. Cheers were given for the volunteers. The men were then dismissed. The nomination of candidates for the representation of the town of New Plymouth in the Assembly has been fixed for Friday, the 2nd December, and the polling on the 9th.
