FRIENDLY SOCIETIES' FETE AT HASTINGS.
The united societies of the district indulged in their annual gathering yesterday at Hastings. Everything was favorable to the success of the fete, ant" the large crowd which gathered on the race-couse appeared to enjoy themselves most thoroughly. The different events were brought off with order and precision, and the arrangements of the committee were admirable in every respect. Messrs T. M. Murphy and R. Mullany as handicappers, Mr W. Miller as judge, and Mr G. T. Cross as starter, gave satisfaction to all competitors, and this year's fete may be looked upon as the most successful in evary respect that has yet been held. The band of the Artillery Volunteers discoursed good music during a portion '. of tbe day, and numerous desciples of : Terpsichore made ample use of it. The following are the results of the different I events of the day :— Maiden Race; distance, 150 yards ; Ist i prize, £2; 2nd 10s.—H. Can tie, 1 ; W. Arrow, 2. The other entries were—G. i Wheeler, E. Brown, x , Napier, scratch, 2; A. Garry, Napier, .1 scratch, 3. The other competitors were —G. Wheeler (scratch), J. M'Guiness v ' (scratch), J. Ross (scratch), J. Moloney, -'f [ (25 yards), E. Barry ran strongly from the i beginning, and won comparatively easily, i Duck Jump; 30 yards, over 3 bara 3 ■ inches high, Ist prize, £1; 2nd, 10s.— ' This was won by J.
