AUCKLAND.
October 21. Riddler's house near Hamilton was burnt yesterday. It was insured, £100 on the building and £100 on the furniture, in the Colonial office. Stevenson's store at Newton was destroyed by fire at midnight last night. The flames were kept from spreading to the adjoining buildings despite the insufficient supply of water. The loss is estimated at £2400. The insurances on the stock amount to £1000, and on the building £400 in the National office. Abbot's £10,000 sweep on the Melbourne Cup was drawn last night in the presence of four hundred members.
