WELLINGTON.
October 18. Mr Travers has withdrawn from the contest for the Te Aro seat. The house of Mr W. W. Whitman, of Carnarvon, was burnt to the ground at 12 o'clock last night. Some of the furniture was saved. The house was insured in the National office for £400. Mr Oliver was sworn in as a member of the Executive Council to-day.
