WAIPAWA.

(FKOM OUR OWN CORBESPONDENT.) September 6, 1881. WPliam Ebbett, a well-known resident in this district, was charged at the Waipawa Police Court to-day, on the information of Sarah Clarke, of WaipawaMate, with illegally assaulting the informant on Saturday last, 3rd instant, at her residence, with intent. Messrs Lawrence, Herrick, Bridge, and Johnston, were the presiding Justices. The case was heard with closed doors, therefore I am unable to give you particulars of evidence. The case occupied about seven and a-half hours in hearing; an adjournment, however, was made for an hour at 6 p.m. The decision of the Justices was given by the chairman at half-past nine, the public being allowed admittance to the Court. It ran as follows :—" That, after carefully weighing all the evidence adduced, and giving the case a very serious consideration, the Bench considers the charge proven, and the prisoner is therefore committed to take his trial at the Supreme Court, Napier, at its forthcoming sitting, bail being accepted for his appearance in the meantime, the accused in £100, and two sureties of £100 each." Bail being forthcoming, the prisoner was liberated from custody. The quarterly meeting of the Waipawa Licensing Bench was held to-day at the Court House Waipawa. Present — Messrs Lawrence, Herrick, Bridge, and . Johnston. New licenses were granted to John Towers for hotel at Whakaruatapu, and Joseph Charles Andrew for Kaikora Hotel, Kaikora, which house was closed at last sitting of the Court. The police otjected to the disorderly manner in wbirh the Waipawa Hotel, Waipawa, was being carried on. Mr Mullinder, the lincensee, stated that he was endeavoring to obtain some competent and approved persoD to manage the house, and asked the Bench to hold over their decision for 14 days to allow him to do co. The request was granted, on condition that Mr Mullinder reside on the premises in the meantime. There were no other objections against licensees raised by the police.
