THE JEWS IN RUSSIA.

Messrr. Louis Cohen and Sons have forwarded us an account of the steps taken to distribute the funds raised for the relief of the Russian Jews. They state that all tho sums remitted from various places have been paid into the banking house of Messrs. Gunzburg. A central committee has been formed at St. Petersburg, consisting of Baron 11. Gunzbnrs, Mons. A. Sack, Director of the Ran que d' Messrs. Bierestock and "tosenfold, lawyers of position, and Dr. Kfi'ii'Vivii'b The Honorary Secretary of the Committee is Baron David G-unzburg. The ' : entril committee have forwarded 15,000 r ::•' '..« 1. 15,000 to Kieff, 6,000 to Smela, and 3,000 to Orechoff. A further sum of 2,525 roubles has been remitted, f ( ,r distribution, to the wife_ of General Drenteln, Govenor-Generalof Kieff, whose solicitude for the Jews is most marked Sums are in course of transmission to the trouble - ! nTa?es in Podolia, and nrrangcmerta are hi'ing organized from Elizabethgrad to direct "ome reieif to A'exandrowitch, a pro.!'' ■"• ""Mch has suffered very severely. In many district* tlie state of feeling is still very excited. The letter ends with v. warm expression of gratitude for the answer to t/ne app-,,1 which Messrs. Cohen made in our columns. We note -.>!th satisfaction the care that is taken to apply the funds most benficially, and to satisfy public opinion as to their distribu'ion. The amiable co-operation of the wife of the Govenor-General of Kieff is a fact full of interest as an example of the sympathy which our suffering co-religionis f s .■,!•-.•■ I'ivip refined and cultivated member-' .!' .f ! cr vaees. The fact to which Mr. Henry Worms has given prominenco tha r non-Jcsvs desire to to l ', c part in the proceedings of the Anglo-Jewish Association is an example of tho warmth which the sentiment sometimes attains. Another noticeable point in the Russian question is the fact that the peasants of one village have voluntarily compensated the Jews of the district for their losses. We trust to hear more of these compensations by the locality. It is only in accordance with the laws of the most civilized nations, and with obvious justice, lhat when the State tins failed to protect its obedient subjects and faithful taxpayers from organized violence, the subjects who are outraged should be compensated by the collective body of citizens. The citizens at large have failed in theirdnty to a, section of their fellow-country-men, and should recoup the latter for their low,—Jewish Chronicle.
