WELLINGTON.

September 6. The steamer Wakatipu arrived from Sydney at one o'clock this morning, and proceeded to the quarantine station. Dr Johnston, the chief medical officer, proceeded on board this morning, and found no sickness, and she will be admitted to pratique to-morrow. Tbe following intercolonial weather exchange has been received -. — Sydney, Monday evening. S.W .winds over Australia, and strong in Tasmania, in relation to an extensive depression which has now passed to the S.E., the barometer being at Albany 30.5, at Sydney 30.0, and at Hobart 29 8. Tho New Zealand Government have received a dispatch enclosing a prcliminaiy report from the Royal Astronomical Society relating to the transit of Venus in 1882. The report contains suggestions favorable to the observations of the different phases. The report states that Australia and New Zealand should be the best stations for observing tbe phase known as "egress retarded." The society suggests that Auckland would probably be the best site for observation in New Zealand, and further that the New Zealand party of three gentlemen should leave London about July 18th arriving in Auckland in the first week in September, thus giving them time to consult with local observers. At the Police Court to-day the proprietor of the Metropolitan Hotel was fined 20s and costs for a breach of the licensing ordinance. James Smith, a draper, was fined a similar amount for a breach of the Employment of Females Act, by employing females after two o'clock on Saturday afternoon.
