EDUCATION BOARD.

The Board met at 10 a.m. Present: The Rev. D. Sidey (in the chair), Messrs Dobson, Harding, Williams, Locke, and Tanner. correspondence. Danevirk School.—From the chairman of Danevirk committee, asking for assistance in repairing a defective chimney in the schoolhouse to the amount of £3 10s. —Approved. Kaikora School.—From the chairman of the Kaikora school committee, forwarding a resolution passed by the committee to the effect that the master, Mr Thompson, be asked to resign on the ground of -v continued ill-health, and dissatisfaction f~~ ' on tbe part of tbe parents with the pro- ; gress of their children. It was resolved to give effect to the resolution, and to give Mr Thompson three months' notice. From Miss A. M. Hameling, resigning her post as assistant mistress of the Kaikora school.- -Accepted. j Napier School.—From the Secretary ?~~* of the Napier school committee, bringing under the notice of the Board the incompleteness of the furniture in the room formerly occupied by the infants. It was resolved that money be granted to make the necessary alterations. Ormondville School.—From the committee of the Ormondville school, statins that the committee had selected Mr Rogers, of Waipawa, to fill the post of head master of their school, and asking the Board to confirm their decision. Resolved that the Board not having any information that Mr Rogers is a certificated teacher cannot confirm the committee's selection. And that the Board recommend that Mr C. H. W. Lock, of Masterton, be appointed. Te Arai School.—From the chairman of the Matawhero school in reference to the opposition of the natives to the native school, and stating that the natives claim the land and had erected whares close to the school-house; also that Mr Randel Johnson had offered a site for a school-house, and recommending the acceptance of the offer, and that the existing school building be removed thither.—Resolve, that Mr Johnson's offer be accepted, and that the Board apply to the Education Department for £60 for removal of present building. Taradale School.—From the secretary of the committee stating Miss Maney had failed to present herself at her duties as assistant mistress since tbe holidays, and that Miss Frame had entered upon her duties.—Approved. I From the same, directing attention to i some requirements of the school, and the >*\ dilapidated condition of the teacher's residence, and asking for a grant sufficient to make tbe necessary repairs.— Resolved that the consideration of the matter be deferred until information is received from Wellington as to the amount of the building grant. Norsewood School.—From the teacher directing attention to the state of bis
residence, and asking that it be made habitable.—Resolved that the necessary repairs be at once made, and that the secretary write to the architect asking for an explanation of the condition of the building. BONUSES TO PUPIL TEACHERS. From the Chairman of tbe Meanee and Taradale School Committees, asking the Board to allow Mr Smith who had instructed a pupil teacher, who had passed the necessary examination, the usual bonus. Several other communications and reports in reference to the passing of pupil teachers were read, also a return of bonuses payable to bead masters, on account of pupil teachers. In connection with this matter, Mr Harding gave notice to move " That the regulation relating to bonuses to pupil teachers be reconsidered. WAIROA SCHOOL. From the Chairman of the Committee in reference to tbe appointment of pupil teachers, and recommending the appointment of G. Gosnel and E. C. Taylor, also referring to the unsatisfactory condition of the school building. The appointment of pupil teachers was approved of, and in reference to the school building, it was resolved to defer the consideration until information was received as to the amount of grant from the Education Department. Leave ot Absence.—Leave of absence was granted to Messrs Ormond and Sutton. Wallingford School.—From the secretary of the committee, asking for a grant of £3 for repairs to a chimney injured by the recent earthquake.—Approved. Grant from Education Department.-— From the Education Department, stating that vouchers had been passed for the payment of grants to the board to the amount of £577 5s 3d. Uncertificated Teachers. — From the Education Department asking for a return of uncertificated teachers in the service of the Board on the 31st of July. NOTICE 01 MOTION. Mr Tanner to move " That the attention of the various school committees be called to their duties under the Act in regard to the disposal of funds under their control, and that they be informed that tbey will be required to keep their expenditure within the limits defined by the Act." SCHOLARSHIPS. Mr Dobson moved in accordance with notice given, that John Burton be paid the scholarship for the time during which he was attending the Napier Grammar School. Mr Locke seconded the motion, The matter was under discussion when our reporter left.
