WOODVILLE.

(FROM OUE OWN CORREBPONMINT.) August 7, 1881. lam glad to see by an advertisement which appears in the Hawke's Bay Herald of tbe sth instant that Woodville is progressing even more rapidly than I anticipated, inasmuch as I see a committee formed to invite a medical practitioner to reside amongst us. I confes* that I was much surprised to see the advertisement, as no public meeting to my knowledge had been convened to take into consideration the question. I presume, however, the " Secretary Doctor's Committee" sees his way to make it worth the while of a gentleman to reside amongst us* 1 have little doubt that were a public meeting called, and the question fully discussed, we should be able to guarantee, with assistance of the benevolent lodgers established here, a sufficient amount annum to secure a gentleman in whom we could place trust.

Since writing the above I am sorry to say that I have to record a fatal accident which occurred this morning ia the Puketoi block, rrsulting in the death of a child, the son of Mr Gilbert, a painter. It appears that, whilst Mrs Gilbert went to draw water from the well, the child got out. of bis bed to get a drink of tea, which was placed on the hob; his shirt caught fire, and the injuries received caused his death. Deep sympathy is felt for bis parents, who are well known in the district.
