It will be seen by our Wellington special correspondent's telegram that the estimates are to be brought down to-morrow. We understand that final arrangements have been made for the Kiwi to carry the footballers to Gisborne. She will leave Napier on Thursday, returning on. Sunday. The Municipal Public Works Committee meet this evening. The principal business, we presume, will bo the consideration of the tenders for the repair of the Beach road and for No. 6 drainage contract. The following cases aro set down for hearing at the sitting of the District Court to be held on Thursday next:—J. G. Kinross v. Smith and Walker, Napier Municipal Council v. W. A. Richardson, and Newton and Irvine v. Ihako Kapo. Last year Tokauo, on the southern shore of Lake Taupo, was literally swarming with pheasants. This season game of all kinds has been very scarce. Colonel White was up there last week, and only succeeded in making a bag of twelve brace of pheasants. We are indebted to Dr. Menzies tor the following Hospital returns:—Patients in hospital afc last date, 14 males and 9 females; admitted during the month, 17 males and 3 females; discharged, 11 males and 5 females; dead, 2 males; remaining in hospital at present date, 18 males and 7 females. The following deeds were submitted to the Commissioner for examination just previous to his leaving for Poverty Bay:— Paora Rerepu to John Sutherland, a lease of part of Waipapa block, dated Ist August,
187-1; Paora IWepu to John Sutherland, _, lease of portion of Waipapa block, dated tlio Ist august, 1874. _ It is reported from Taupo that Mr Graham is about to erect a large hotel near Tapuaoharnru, on tho same principle as those he possesses at Waiwera, Ellerslie and Rotorua. Of all the hot springs in the --_. iLake district those of Taupo are said to be r the most efficacious in all cases demanding mineral water treatment, and the waDt o„ a hotel there in the immediate vicinity of the springs has been the cause of drawing invalids to Waiwera and Rotorua. _ The remains of Mr S. Page were consigned to their last resting place yesterday afternoon, a long procession of the brethren of the Loyal Napier Lodge of Oddfellows following the hearse to the grave. We regret to add that the deceased leaves a widow and a family cf little children in most straightened circumstances—in circumstances indeed that demand the attention of the charitably disposed. The Key. De Berdt Hovell and Mr N. Williams will be happy to receive subscriptions on their behalf. _ We learn that a fire occurred this morning about one o'clock in a wash-house at the roar of Mr M«Donald's hotel, Taradale. In consequence of the prompt efforts of some of the neighbors, whom Mr M'Donald desires to thank, the fire was confined to the interior of the wash-house, and no further damage was done. It cannot be ascertained how the fire originated, but ifc is strongly suspected that somebody had been telling the old old story to one of the maids, at one o'clock in the morning, and had been incautious in the use of matches. The Returning Officer for the Borough of Napier has appointed Wednesday, the 10th of this month, for the nomination of candidates for the seat in the Municipal Council rendered vacant by the resignation of Mr J. Leonard. It must be remembered that whoever is elected, will hold his seat only for the space of three weeks, so it is suggested it would be better for the burgesses af the North Ward to withold the ' nomination of any one until the election takes place. It will save both Borough and the candidates some if this suggestion is acted upon. At the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning, before H. Eyre Kenny, Esq., R.M.,John Thompson was oharged with drunkenness, and not putting in an appearance his bail was forfeited. Arthur Ander- d son was oharged with leaving his vehicle ■ unattended, and fined 5s and costs. Edwin I Hollond was charged with furious driving 1 at the Spit, and fined 10s. and costs. J. P. Hamlin was charged with permitting his chimney to be on fire. His Worship said that it was frequently the oaße that the sweep should be the person charged;; his work was carelessly done, and a fire often took place when the owners did not expect it; if it couldjbe shown that a sweep had neglected to do his work, and a fire was the consequence, he oould be sued for damages; the accused would be fined 5s and costs. Eliza White, alias Gallagher, appeared: to answer a charge of Assault upon Andrea Diinti, but the complainant not appearing the charge was dismissed. John Wentworth Triorge was charged with deserting his wife and family; there was no appearance of the accused, and His Worship made an order that he pay £1 per week to commence on the Bth of August, and intimated that if the order was disobeyed the aooused would probably be sent to gaol. Several of the players have improved very much during the last week. There is some talk of an entertainment being got up on the return of the team from Gisborne.
