STOCK ACCOMMODATION ON OUR RAILWAY.
(To the Editor of the Daily Telegraph.] Sir, —The rates for carrying sheep by rail having been again raised, it is high time tbat yards were erected at some of the stations for tbe convenience of persons putting stock in the tricks. There is an apology for a yard at Hastings, but at no other station along the line as far as I know. In Auckland there are sheep and cattle yards at all stations, and every facility is afforded and encouragement given to stockowners to use the railway in preference to the road. In Hawke's Bay the reverse is the case, aud as a matter of actual expenditure the road is the cheapest. The number of sheep sent by rail from Hastings annually ought certainly to warrant the erection of yards at that place, if at no other. I wrote to and interviewed the late district manager several times on this matter, and when the general manager was here a short time back I received a verbal promise from him that it should be attended to. Hitherto nothing has been done. I therefore ask the use of your columns to make the matter public.—l am, &c, Thomas Bishop. Hastings, July 18, 1881.
