Tbe total amounts subscribed so far to the funds of tbe Land League is £8000. The leading members of the League consider tbat that amount is insufficient to enable them to defeat the landlords, and they ask for further contributions. June 30. Notwithstanding the rigorous measures taken by the Russian Government to suppress Nihilism, the movement continues to spread. Public feeling in Itply continues greatly excited owing to the action of the French Government over the Tunisian question, and ?nti French riots of a serious character have occurred at Venice.
Great efforts have been made by the United States Government during the past year to reduce tbe national debt, and a reduction of 100,000,000 dollars has been effected. July 3. The Fenian movements in England are causing considerable anxiety to the police authorities, who are tracing them out with the utmost vigilance. Fenians have threatened to blow up Hawarden Castle, Flintshire, the residence of tbe Mr Gladstone, and Eaton Hall, Cheshire, tbe seat of the Duke of Westminster.
Earl Cowper, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, has issued an order prohibiting a meeting which had been projected for the purpose of obstructing a sheriff's sale.
The Empress of Germany, whose health had been improving for the past few days, has undergone a serious relapse, and her condition causes great anxiety in tbe Imperial Court and throughout tbe country.
At the recent election in Hungary the Liberals obtained a majority of fifty seats.
The Spanish Government has offered to make important concessions in the Customs duties levied upon imports from England, provided the latter will make a reduction upon the duties now charged on Spanish wines. A French mission in Abyssinia has been attacked by the natives.
A volunteer rifle match held in Dublin resulted in a victory for tbe English team, which defeated the Irish by 33 points. Tbe gold medal presented by the Commissioners of the Melbourne Exhition to the Queen, has been banded to Her Majesty by Mr Stanford, the representative, British Royal Commissioner. . The second volume of Sir Gavan Duffy's work, " YouDg Ireland," will be ready for publication in November.
