NOISELESS, EASY RUNNING-, (And without fear of contradiction) THE BEST OF ALL KNOWN OEWIKG T\/TACHINES This, the latest claimant for the tho position o "Cheapest and Bear in the wond'-istobe eeenal the Warehouse of Mr E. W. KnoWjEU, Hastinr/R-street, and 'inquesiiouably tho many ingenious points displayed in the construction render it well w >rth examining. Asa matterc7 fact the horizontal feed is common to many machines, and the term has therefore no signification of importance. But in the White machine there is this marked improvement on many other varieties—that the feed p'.ate .<,cta on elthf.r side of the needle. In other words, the work is pushed along as if by two finders instead of one. Obviously this tends to produce very even results, and it enables the operator to sew along the or lr.it edge of the fabric at pleasure. At tho S.imo time, the arm of tho machine i& at a mor3 than ordinary height above tho table, mid the pressuro.foot also has a liberal amount of pky given to It by the aid of a well-contrived sprino-. A large masi* of material could thurefore bo pissec l . ove: - the work table, and through the machine, without " u he re mctest chance of njuiy. The entire mechanism is of tbe most simple character, and ao little friction is thero th-.t one may rim th': rmchtne— almost without- being sonsciuus of the fact. When tho main part of tho machine ia not required to be run—as, for instance, when shuttle bobbins are to be wound —a little spring catch ia thrown bank, and the sewing mechanism is thereby disconnected from the driving icear. Further, when any given heaving may in tho course of time become worn, the mere turning of a scrsw effects a refitting of the friction surfaces. One specially ingenious contrivance ia displayed in the tension arrangement of the shuttle. There are no holes to bo threaded, as i 3 commonly the case ; but the thread beiucr; wound iv and out Oa few grooves, a little stsel plate pops down, and by • the action of a spring which can be made light or heavy at will, keeps just the desired strain on the under thread. The tension for tho upper thread is also automatic. The machines are now on view, and an inspection is respectfully solicited, when Price lists, ccc., and fuller particulars can be obtained at E. W.
