ARRIVAL OF THE ENGLISH MAIL VIA SAN FRANCISCO

Auckland, May 30. The P.M. s.s. Zealandia arrived last night at 6.20. She left 'Frisco on the Bth, and stopped off Honolulu on tbe 15th and landed passengers and mails. She resumed her voyage four hours later. Had moderate and fair weather through the passage. Last Saturday evening a brilliant comet was observed in a southerly direction, 50deg. west, altitude 11-5, tail 1-43 in N.N.W. direction. As the comet lessened the altitude of the tail looked N.N.E. The comet was Been for three-quarters of an hour. The The ZealaDdia carried tio freight for ttonoltilu, but stopped about three miles off the port and landed the passengers and mails. Small-pox is no longer considered an epidemic there, only a few spasmodic cases occuring at rare intervals among the natives. The other islands of the group are said to be entirely free from the disease. The death rate was decreasing rapidly for some weeks prior to the Zealandia's visit. Passengers for New Zealand—Madame Gartlan and friend, Mr and Mrs R. S.tark, Mr and Mrs F. Larkin and five Children, Messrs Jones* Porter, and for feydney 25. The cargo includes 100 (Jases of salmon for Nelson, 20 cases of honey, i case telephone instruments for Wellington, 400 cases, and 20 bales of hops for Port Chalmers.
