May 27. In the House of Commons to-day a question was put to the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies regarding information which has transpired as to certain expenditure incurred by the Treasurer and Controller of Revenue in Western Australia without due authority. Iv reply Mr Grant Duff said the circumstances connected with the unauthorised payments bad been under the consideration of the Government, and instructions would be sent to the Governor of the colony with a view to prevent any future irregularities in the expenditure of public money by tbe Treasurer.

At the wool auction to-day 9000 bales were offered. The tone of the sale was strong. Inferior and faulty wools of all kinds were less depressed, and there was more enquiry for cross-bred and scoured sorts. May 28. At tbe wool sale to-day 8900 bales were offered. The tone of the auction was firm. Trickett and' Kelly, his trainer, have started for New York. News is to hand from Ireland that serious riots have occurred at Mitchelstown, in County Cork. Twelve thousand (sic) peasants assembled there to oppose the service of writs for the ejectment of some tenants, and upon the police arriving on the scene fighting of a very severe character took place. After much bloodshed on both sides the rioters were dispersed, and the evictions of the tenants were finally completed. The Irish Land League is daily increasing its agitation throughout the country, and ia showing that it will oppose any attempt to prohibit its meetings.
