CHRISTCHURCH.

May 13. The weather, which wag very hot in the early part of the week, changed today, and heavy rain from the south-west is now falling. A master in want of bricklayers has advertised here for a week without getting them. There appears to be a dearth of such workmen as other employers have been complaining lately of their inability to get bricklayers. Two attempts were recently made to burn down a house at Leithfield by means of firing a hedge close to it. A man named Michael Hennasy was ariested on suspicion of being the culprit, and was brought up yesterday at the Amberley Magistrate's Court and remanded. Bail was refused.

Ex-Judge Weston has received a requisition asking him to stand for.the seat vacated by Mr Maeters, but as he is not on any roll he is obliged to decline.
