The soil is generally good, and suitable for agriculture, more or less covered with red and white pine and other timber; the land is nearly level with the exception of Sections 20 and 21, Block 111, which are broken and soil not sp good. In Block VI, Section 15 is good flat agricultural land, lightly timbered; Section 17 similar land and soil with heavy bush; Sections 19, 21, and 24 light bush, nesrly flat. TAKAPAtT SURVEY DISTRICT. In Block V the ground is undulating, the soil.liq;ht, and covered with forest chiefly red and white/pipe. Block VI is of a similar character, except that there. are small quantities of totara "mixed with other bushi' Sections 1 and 2, Block X, are good soil,' but hilly. The bush is suitable for mills, and owing to facilities of communication by railway the trade in timber is increasing. Guaranteed by the State. ALTHOUGH this office has been in existence for a period of more than seven years, it is believed that the objects for which it was established are not sufficiently known or understood. It is desired to set forth in a concise form information respecting the business which this office undertakes : 1. The charge of all kinds of money trusts, Buch as Mairiage Settlements, monies to be invested ifor tho liui'eflt of Minors, moneys bequeathed for charitable onjects, monejsthe title to which is in dispute, or wiioee legal owner is unknown or cannot be found, etc., eta. 2. The administration of the wills of persons who by Appointing the Public Trustee as their executor secure trie eruorantee of the State for the due fulfilment of their wishes, and avoid the risk consequent on the appointment of private persons as executors, who not unfrequently, though earnestly desirous of acting for the benefit of the parties interested, fail to carry ou;, legally the objects for which they were appointed, and consequently involve themselves arid those whose interests they are striving to protect in costly and harrassing litigation. 3. The administration of all estates of Which no disposition has been made by will, whenever relatives do not wish to incur the responsibility of administration, or cannot from any cause obtainlthe necessary powers to act. In such cases it is the duty of the Public Trustee to discharge all legal debts so far as the assets extend, and divide the residue 1 amongst the next of kin. 4. The administration of the estates of lunatics, ! lunatic patients, and convicts. 6. The charge of lands lying waste and unoccupied of which the owner is unknown, or who has been absent from the colony for ten years, having left no known agent.
