The Daily Telegraph. SATURDAY, APRIL 9, 1881.
In making bis financial statement last year Major Atkinson estimated the Customs revenue 1880-1881 at£1,250,000. The financial year closed on March 31st, and we learn from a contemporary that the returns from the Customs exceed the estimate of the Colonial Treasurer by rather more than £50,00. From the following table it will be seen that the Customs returns have only once been higher, so that we at all events have # good evidence of the revival trade: — 1872-73 £855,812 1873-74 1,108,677 1874-75 1,223,276 1875-76 1,225,313 1876-77 1,199,147 1877-78 1,274,458 1878-79 1,307,736 1879-80 1,152,665 1880-81 1,300,000 The Auckland Herald, commenting upon the satisfactory state of affairs as disclosed by the above figures, says that it must be kept in mind that the Customs revenue for last year has not been stimulated by a copious immigration, or a plentiful expenditure of borrowed money, but has arisen from the natural increase of population, and the healthy extension of settlement. The revival of the Customs revenue will be the best answer to those persons in London who have shown themselves ready to predict disaster for the colony.
