HAWSE'S BAY JOCKEY CLUB'S ANNUAL MEETING.
SECOND DAY,
The weather yesterday was everything the most ardent sporting man could desire, and that fact, combined with the probability of good fielde, and keenly contested races, brought about a large gathering at Hastings, and several of the races must have amply compensated the most critical lover of a good borse race. There appeared to be a difficulty in almost every race in getting a good start, ■whether from the fractiousness of the horses or other cause we could not judge, but considerable time was wasted at the commencement of almost every race. We think this might be easily obviated l>7 a little firmoeaa on the part of the
starter; a little plain talking to the jockeys by the starter has often a wonderful effect on the fractiousness of horses. All other arrangements on the course were admirable, and the meeting concluded without a single incident to mar the enjoyment of those present, if we except the death of Camelia at the finish of the Produce Stake?, particulars of which we give elsewhere, and, of course, the chagrin incidental on backing the wrong horses. The following are the events: — PROVINCIAL PRODUCE BTAKEB, Of 60 soys.; distance, 1 mile; weight for age; for all horses bred in the provincial district of Hawke's Bay that have never won a race exceeding 25 sove. in value. Winner of any such race after entry to carry 71b penalty. Mr C. 0. Murray's eh o Firefly, by Papapa, out of Ladybird, Bst 61b (Robertson) 1 Mr G. Heelop'g eh f Prim, Bst 101b (Gooseman) 2 Mr W. Ruddick's eh g Pioneer, Pacific—Maggie, Bat 12lb (Hodgson) 3 —Algebra was scratched. Betting—Even money on Firefly, 2 to 1 acst all the re9t. Firefly justified the expectations of his backers, leading the whole way, and winning easily by a length. HANDICAP HURDLE BACE. Of 150 soys, second horse to receive 25 soys. from the stake; distance, about "2£ miles. Winner of any Handicap Hurdle Race of .50 so vs. or upwards after declaration of weights to carry 71b extra. Mr R. Wheeler's b g Matau, by Dainty Ariel, lOst 101b (M'lvor)... 1 Mr W. Douglas's b g Rawenata, 9st 71b(Munn) 2 Mr W. Douglas's b g Harkaway, 9st 12 (Hopkinson) 3 Mr J. Ruddick's eh h Pope, 9st (Jellett) 0 Betting—4 to 1 agst Te Whetu, 6to 4 Matau, 3 to 1 Harkaway, 2 to 1 Angler, 5 to 2 Rawenata and Ada, 5 to 1 Pope. This was perhaps the most magnificent race ever run in Hawke's Bay. Angler went away at the start, closely followed by Ada and Te Whetu, Pope bringing up the rear. At the third jump Angler touched, dispensed with his rider, and was out of the race. Ada made the running after this, closely followed by Kawenata and Harkaway. "On coming into the straight all the horses were well together, with the exception of Pope, who was pegging along , far in the rear. Within fifty yards of the winning post Mclvor called upon Matau, who shot through his horses and won by a length over Rawenata, Harkaway being close up. Matau was splendidly ridden by Mclvor, and appeared to have plenty of go in him at the finish. HACK HURDLE BACE, Of2o soys, not lese than 10 stone up; distance about I§■ mile. Open to all horses that have never run in a weight for age or Handicap Hurdle Race or Steeplechase. Mr. R. Sussex started favourite, and made the running all the way. Jack Spratt was well ridden, and made a game race for it, finishing close up. tradesman's handicap, Of 200 soys ; second horse to receive 25 soys from the stake; distance, 1£ mile. Mr C. C. Murray's b f Mavis, by Kingfisher (S.A.) out of Songstress 6st,(Wood) 1 Mr W. Walter's br h Libeller, Bst 41b, (G. Williams) 2 Hon. W. Robinson's eh h Natator, 9at 6lb, (Derritt) 3 Mr W. H. Betting—2 to lon Natator, even on Libeller, 2 to 1 against Dan, 3 to 1 My Dream, 4 to 1 Moanataiari, 5 to 1 Mavis. There was difficulty in getting a start in this race. A false start was made, and Moanataiari, Dan, and another horse got to the judge's box before they could I pull up._ When a start was effected Moanataiari again went away, closely followed by My Dream and Mavis. When half way round the course Mavis went to the front, and gradually increased her lead until cries of " Mavia easily" were general. Natator and Libeller meantime were going neck and neck, and evidently watching one another until the critical moment carae for a rush, but there was want of judgment displayed, and, according to the decision of the judge, the rush came a little too late, the little roare keeping her head in front at the post, Natator wan less than half a length behind Libeller, and the others well up. hawke's bay plate, Of 100 soys; weight forage ; distance 2 miles. Hon. W. Robinson's eh h Natator, 9st 41b (Derritt) 1 Mr A. M'Donald's br h Foul Play, 9st 41b (J. Williams) 2 —Angler, Randwick, Libeller, Primrose, and Bads worth, were scratched. Betting—2 to 1 on Foul Play, even money on Natator.
This resolved iteelf into a match between Foul Play and Natator, the former being the favorite, and leading most of the way. In the straight, however, Natator's rider called upon him, and he showed himself all there by coming in a winner by a length. CONSOLATION HANDICAP. Of 30 80V8 ; distance, 1 mile ; entrance, 2 hoys.
