THE CZAR'S NEW WIFE.
What is called an ' Imperial rt-conciliation scene' between the Czar's wife, Princess Dolgorouki, and his daughter-in-law, wifu of tho Crown Prince, occuitccl recently in Livadia, and is described by the Easier Nachrichten : — ' Immediately after their first greeting, which was very ardent, the Czar turned to the Crown Princess eagerly and said " Make a visit to my wife as early as possible." The lady replied that she would not delay it for a moment, and went straight to the apartments of the Princess Dolgorouki. When she appeared in the doorway she saw the Czar's wife prostrate on her knees before a sacred icon. The visitor remained standing. The new Empress had not noticed her. As soon as the latter discovered her visitor she remained in her kneeling position, and, turning her face, streaming with tears, upon the Princess, she threw up her hands and exclaimed. ' Forgive mo! 1 have done it for my children's sake!" The reconciliation between the two ladies is said to have been complete. The Czar was delighted, and hurried off to the Minister Saburoff, who had also arrived in Livadia. He knocked at the window of the statesman's apartment, and when the latter appeared he told him wilh many friendly words that he, too, must now go and make himself known to the lady. It is observable that the Czar in speaking of the Princess Dolgorouki to others, invariably uses the expression "my wife," and not " the Czarina."''
