Sydney, February 24. The result of the recent inspection of the Botany swamp is that the Lake Council will adopt an intermittent system of water supply. Punch's Hotel has been sold for £24,000 to Frank Punch. There was sharp opposition in the Assembly on the vote for allowance for lodging the Governor's aide-de-camp, he being bis own son, and residing at Government House. Ultimately the vote passed. A woman named Mrs Lewis has died under chloroform while her teeth were being extracted. Dr. Cox was in attendance during the operation. At the inquest the jury found that everything that could be done was done. Two shops, with thirty-five feet frontage to Pitt-street, have realised £10,000, which is equal to £300 per foot. Forbes, the war correspondent, who is lecturing to immense audiences in New York and other large cities of the States, will arrive in Auckland in May. His tour the colonies will probably be conducted by R. S. Smythe. Williamson has bought from Gilbert and Sullivan the sole right of producing the Pirates of Penzance in Australia and New Zealand, and notifies that he will proceed against anyone infringing the copyright. Penrith. A murder was committed at Agnes Banks on Tuesday, the victim being a farmer named Freeman, and the murderer a relation of deceased's named Williams. The latter came behind and battered the skull of tbe former in with a heavy stick. Williams hid himself taking with him a long knife, but he was founrt, arrested and lodged in the lockup. He is supposed to be insane. Temora. There is great excitement about the new reefing district which has been opened two and a half miles south-west of Upper Town. Claims have been pegged to a great distance.
