EDUCATION BOARD.

The Board met at 10.30 o'clock,

Present: Messrs. Ormond, (chairman), Sutton, J. N. Williams, Harding, Tanner, Captain Russell, and the Revd. D. fcsidey.

CORRESPONDENCE

From the chairman of the Clive School Committee, complaining that the school building was much too small, and requesting that additions be made ; also, tbat the teaching staff was inadequate, and recommending the appointment of Miss Louisa Berry as pupil teacher, and of Mrs Gush as sewing and singing mistress at a salary of £15 ; also, asking that an artesian well be sunk on the school ground.—The Board approved of the appointment of Miss Berry; From the Chairman of the Gisborne Committee, asking for an expenditure of £15 in tbe repair of the teacher's residence. —The Board authorised the expenditure. From the same, recommending the appointment of Mr Morgan as head master. —The Board approved of the appointment.

From the same, requesting the Board's sanction to sundry improvements to the school building.—The Board had no funds at present for the purpose. From the same, concerning purchase of tank and requesting reimbursement. — Amount authorised.

From the Hastings Committee, requesting the appoiutinent of another pupil teacher, on the ground that the number of pupils was 127.—The Board's reply was that the number must reach 130 to entitle the school to another teacher.

From the same, relating to supplying water to a settler from the school well.— Approved of, provided that the right is let from year to year, and that the supply is not diminished to tbe school. From the secretary to the Heretaunga Settlement, requesting the establishment of a school in that settlement.—Deferred for the present. From the Kaikora Committee, asking for railway passes for 29 children from Te Aute. —Approved. From M. E. Teychennie, of the Kaikora school, resigning her appointment of assistant teacher. —Accepted.

From the Napier Committee, recommendiag the appointment of Mr Barclay as third master.—Approved. From Mr F. J. Tiffen, in reference to raising of fence between his section and that now being filled in for new infant school. —Approved. From Ormondville Committee informing the Board of the manner in which the election of the committee had been carried out.—Explanation satisfactory. From the same recommending tbe appointment of Mrs Thorns as assistant teacher.—Approved.

From sundry Committees requesting expenditure for various purposes, to which all the replies were simlar that the Board had no funds.

From Mr Henry Williams, offering as a free gift half an acre of land at Te Aute as a site for a school and teacher's residence. —The secretary was instructed to convey the Board's thanks for Mr Williams' offer, and to state that the gift would be accepted subject to the General Government giving grant for tho erection of the buildings.

From the Taradale Committee, recommending Miss Ellen J. Snell as pupil teacher.—Approved, subject to presentation for examination.

From Education Department in reference to Hse of the " Temperance Lesson Book " in the public schools.—The Board was willing to assist in carrying out any examination which might be approved in order to secure competition for Sir W. Fox's prizes, From secretary to the School Commissioners, forwarding cheque for £200, revenue derived from reserves within the district.

From Education Department, stating that £713 15s had been placed to the credit of the Board.

From the Wairoa School Committee, in reference to inspection of the school, and regretting dismissal of Mr Gosnell as drill instructor—The Board refused to take any action in the matter.

From Mr W. E. Morrison, upon which the Board passed the following resolution :—" That a copy of the resolution proposed at the last meeting of the Board be again sent to Mr Morrison, and that he be informed that, unless a reply is received by February 22, stating that the Napier Grammar School will be subject to examination by the Inspector to the Board, the scholarship boys will not be permitted to attend longer at that Bchool."

From the residents in the Waerenga-a-hika district, praying for the establishment of a school and school district— Referred to the Matavvhero Committee.

From residents in Makatoko district, praying for establishment of school and school district.- Approved

A petition praying for the separation of Meanee from Taradale.—Referred to Taradale Committee.

COMMITTEE ELECTIONS.

Mr Tanner proposed, and the Rev. D. Sidey seconded, Sl That, in dealing with protests against the election of School Committees, the Board will confirm all elections in which the votes given for the members of the elected Committee form a clear majority, which would still be a ma]'ority provided the votes objected to bad not been given."

Letters were read from residents in Taradale objecting to certain votes that had been taken, and other letters complaining that votes had been refused at the election of the School Committee. After all the protests had been read and considered, the Board confirmed the election of the Meanee-Taradale School Committee, excepting in the case of Mr P. Dolbel, who was not eligible, he not being a resident in the district as required by section 58 of the Education Act.

Protests against the Ormondville Committee elections were read and considered. The Board disallowed the protests, and confirmed the election of the Committee.

Vouchers for payments were passed, and the Board then adjourned.
