January 24. Consols, 98f. Adelaide wheat, ex-warehouse, 50s 6d ; Adelaide flour, ex-warehouse, 34s 6d; New Zealand wheat, ex-ship, 455. The markets for Australian wheat, and tallow are firm. In the House of Commont to-day the Right Hon. W. E. Forster, Chief Secretary for Ireland, asked leave to introduce a bill empowering the Viceroy of Ireland, to issue warrants for the arrest and detention ofall persons suspected of treason, and to take steps to restrict the sale and possession of arms in any district. January 25. The Bill for the adoption of coercive measures in Ireland was introduced by the Irish Secretary in the House of Commons to-day. The powers which it proposes to give the Viceroy to issue warrants for the arrest and detention of suspected persons guilty of treasonable conduct, and will hold good until October, 1882. Dr. Lyons, the member for Dublin, has given notice of an amendment of the measure, requiring the Government to carry out reforms in Ireland before pursuing a policj of coercion. In the course of the speech made in the House to-day, Sir Stafford Northcote, referring to the remarks made by the Secretary for Ireland in introducing his bill, said that Mr Forster's facts were sadly convincing of the necessity for immediate stringent measures in regard to Ireland. The trial of the Leaguers at Dublin still proceeds. Judge Fitzgerald finished his summing up to-day. The whole tenor of his address is generally admitted to have been strongly hostile to the accused Leaguers.
