A heavy northerly gale did considerable damage on Thursday night. The Caledonian Society's stand was completely unroofed, portions being carried over the gasworks, and the Hardware Company's building was also unroofed. At All Saints parish meeting last night the Rev. Mr Fitchett stated that two members of the Government had informed him that they were favorable to an alteration of the Education Act to give ministers an opportunity ot giving religious instruction in the public schools during school hours, at least twice a week.
At the City Court to-day Thomas Richardson, for embezzling monies belonging to Martin Watson, his employer, was sentenced to twenty-eight day's hard labor in consideration of tbe good character given him by the prosecutor.
