PIGEON MATCH.
The pigeon matches as advertised came off in a paddock a few hundred yards from Mr Ruddick's West Clive Hotel. The shooting was delayed considerably after tbe time appointed for starting, and when it did commence there was a strong wind blowinsr, which interfered considerably with the accuracy of the sportsmen. Mr S. Hooper acted as referee, and his office was no sinecure. A portion of the crowd, in their clamorous efforts to lay, made it most difficult for the man manipulating the traps to hear the call of tbe shooter. Mr Hooper, however, succeeded in bringing off all the events satisfactorily, and the result was an enjoyable day's sport. The totalisator was at work, aod appeared to do a fair portion of the busiotss going. During an interval in the shooting Mr Ruddick supplied those engaged with a good substantial lunch free of charge, and although ample justice was done to it, it did not appear to interfere with the accuracy of aim of those shooting in the matches. The following are the three events of the day : — champion stakes, Of 1 soy each ; three birds each ; 3 traps, 10yds apart; 25yds rise; 80 yards boundary. Second highest 6Corer to Bave his stakes. In this handicap there were nineteen nominated, but only twelve accepted. Evett, from his shooting in the previous match, was the favorite, and he again succeeded in placing himself in front. On the seven birds he was tied by Danvers, but in shooting off Danvers, missed his bird, and Evett scored. Leonard shot well, and in the early part of the match was much fancied.
