To the Editor : Sir, — The financial position of the Hawke's Bay cricketers must be very " dicky" when it was resolved at a late meeting , to raise the sum of £15 by public subscription for the purpose of putting the ground in order prior to the forthcoming match with the Australians. Why, I would lend them the amount myself at eight per cent on approved security.— I am, &c, CoNEirus O'Neil. Taradale, Januaiy 10, 1881.

Mr Stephen Pell, of Clive, opened a subscription list yesterday in aid of the widow and family of the late William Caldwell, and up to an early hour m the evening he had sums upon hin list amounting , to £75, all collected, in Clive and the immediate neighborhood. The case of Mrs Caldwell is a moat deserving one ; her late husband had been resident in this district for a good number of years, and had always borne the character of a steady industrious man, and a eood neighbour. In her large family Mrs Caldwell has a legacy left her which will prove a heavy burden unless she is liberally assisted by kindly disposed friends. It may be found desirable to clear off a mortgage upon a piece of land owned by Mrs Caldwell, but subscribers may rest assured that monies forwarded to Mr Pell will be judiciously disposed of. It will give us great pleasure to receive and acknowledge any subscriptions sent to this office.

A special meeting of the Napier Rowing Club was held at the Criterion Hotel yesterday evening for the purpose of electing a match committee. Prior to the commencement of the business the secretary complained that he had not been consulted with respect to the calling of the meeting, and thai the advertisement had neither hie signature nor a.ssent. He thought an indignity had been cast upon his office. Mr W. Bogle (the captain), who was in the chair, explained <;hat the meeting had been called under rule 9, and therefore it did not require the assent; of the secretary to make it in order. Mr Bee agreed with the secretary's remarks, and wished to know by whose authority the advertisements had been inserted in the papers. The Captain : "By mine." Mr R. Price, as one of the six whose signatures were to the advertisement, deprecated waste of time over a question of mere red-tape. It was sufficient that a meeting had been got together ; probably the influence of the secretary's name at the bottom of the advertisement would have induced a larger attendance, but it was idle to discxiss whether it would have had that effect. The secretary immediately resigned his office, but consented to act till the close of the meeting. The following match committee was then elected: —Messrs. A. C. Dewes, R. Duncan, J. Begg, J. Liddle, W. Bogle, A. P. Sheath, W. J. Tabuteau, C. D. Kennedy, and B. Brooking. A vote of thanke to the chairman terminated <toe proceedings,
