MISS JENETTE BENNETT IN A CONVENT.
"Jennie June," in a letter to the Baltimore Aitii'ri'ttn, says: The reports which associated the name of Mi^sJenette Bennett, James Ooi don Bennett's sister, with a conventual life have proved true. Miss Bennett, to the great regret of her hi other, who is deeply attached to his sister, has taken the first vows at the convent of the Sacred Heart, and is forever lost to the world. The event seems a ghastly sort of parody on the little power which the good of this world possesses to confer happiness If two persons in the world possess means unlimited for earthly enjoyment thej aie James Gordon Bennett and Ins si^lu, jet she sees nothing better to do with her youth and beauty than immure them in a convent ! But it is not so strange as it appears, after all, and the solution of the problem is easily found in thechaiartcr of the young lady herself, so ill-suited to the splendid loneliness of her surroundings. Miss Bennett was a lovely £>hy gnl, very modest and painfully retiring in her disposition— so much «o that society, especially the somewhat pronounced and ultra-fashionable society into which she was introdnrid, was the most tijing ordeal to her. She was rarely visible at her brother's dinner paiti'-s, but on occasions when ladies weie invited, and she was obliged to receive them, she did so with an |ifoit which occasioned her a gieat amount of self-sacri-hee, and received the polite attentions of the most polished gentlemen of American and English society with a reserve which was all the more hopeless because it did not proreed from pmle, but rather from humility, sepai ation and abandonment to othei ideals. The s>-nect youn« girl was. however, «'i charming feature of the magnificent home, corner of Thirty eighth btieet and Fifth-avenue, and many others will miss her presence iu its stately rooms besides her brother.
Sick Room. — The management of a sick room is a study to which too little attention is paid. Kind-hearted mothers and nurses do an infinite amount of harm by stuffing their charges when sick. The better way is to leave nature to herself. When she can assimilate food she will make the patient feel hungry. It is not generally known that, in addition to the largest variety of caipets in Auckland there may also bo seen at the City Hall furnishing rooms a nice assortment of furniture, so that buyoia can make their selec tion of di apery, clothing, millinery, carpets furniture, bedding, &c, at one establishment, and depend on getting goods at most reasonable puces. liolloway and Garlick aie fortunate in securing the services of Mr. R. (Jranwell (late C'ranwell and Co., Shortland street), who is now superintending their cabinet depaitment, and is producing the same class of substantial and handsome furnituie which gained foi that firm such a good leputation. Some very chaste drawmg100m suites are now on Mew, also dining, bedroom, kitchen, furniture, and an immense variety of chairs, to suit any class of rooms Hotel-keepers, boarding-house propi letois, house-keepers and young people contemplating mati imony are raeommended to pay a visit to Holloway and Garlick's, drapers, clothiers, cabinet-makers, and upholstcreis, Citv Hall, Queen stieet Auckland.
