HIGHWAY BOARD MEETINGS. REMUERA.

A MEETISO of the mtepayeri of the Remuont Highway District was held last night in th« Mount Hobson school-ioom. — On the motion of Mr. J. M. Lennox, Mr. Short was voted to the chair. — The advertisement convening the meeting was read, and the Chairman stated that the meeting was cnlled for the purpose of •electing a number of gentlemen to be elected on the Highway Board to day. The main road had beon grossly neglected during tha year, and th« object of the meeting was to ■elect gentlemen who would look after the interests of the residents on the main road. In somo places the mud was knee deep.— Mr. J. M. Lennox said that last year the majority of the trustees had been periom residing along the Beach Road, and th« consequence w»i that the greater part of the rate* had bean expended on the Beach Road, to suit the convenience of a few latepuyeis. O*t of £600 receiptu, £449 had been expended on tha Beach Road, and a gieat portion of that road had been wathod away, and the money, consequently, wasted. He would suggest that Messrs. J. M. Clark, Hanks, and H. Short receive the suppoit of tho ratepayers of the main road.- Mr. Scarborough thought that if the meeting had been called to discuss the whole question of management and expenditure it would Live been more to the point. HowtYer, though he had an interest in the Beach Road, he would coidiilly support such a motion as Mr. Lennox suggested.— Mr. Banks coincided with the previous speakers. In many places th« roads had boeu merely patched, and that very badly. — Another gentleman s*id that he thought the men employed to repair the roads were tho men who were good for nothing else, and could not oven <lo this work properly. The roads wero theiefoie in a very bad state. — Mi. Lennox then moved, " That this meeting pledges itself to support Messrs. Banks, J. M. C'laik and S. Short us trustees." — Mr. W. Graham seconded, — Mr. "Wren said the three gentlemen named live very near to each other, and wo»ld probably only look after that poi tion of the road near where thoy lived. — Mr. Scaiboiough : Not if they were honest men. —A latepayer : That's the question. — Mi. Wren said it was important to select men that evening who were sure to be sleeted. They should be cueful also to select men at that meeting who would not disappoint them by lef using to stand. — Mr. Lcnnov stated that tho gentleman he numed weie wilting to act. —Mr. Bank* expressed Inn willingness to withdraw if the meeting chose to select suine raoie influential and better qualified peivm m his pl.ice. — Several other ratepayeis spoke bi lefty to the same purpose, and it was asseited by one gentleman that the Beach Road was merely a bobby of Mr. Thomaa Moinn's. — Mr. B.»nk» then proposed that Messrs. J. M. Claik, Frank Buoklanu, and G. Heskoth he the gentlemen they should pledge to Ruppoi t in the olection to take place this evening.— Mr. Lennox withdrew his motion, and seconded Mr. Banks', which was carried. — A ratepayer wished to know the number of votes in the district.- Mr. J. M. Lennox informed him that the number did not exceed 200.— The meeting closed, after a rote of thanks had been passed to tho chairman.

FUKEKOHE EAST. Th» annual meeting of the siborc highway district was held at Tualcau on Saturday, the 22nd instant. There was a fair attendance of ratepayer!. — Mi. Joshua Kobimon occupied the chair, and rcid the adveitineniQnt calling the meeting. — Mr. W. Moigan read the statement of accounts : — Receipts : Kate* collected, £110 4s. lid. ; road bond grant from Geneial Government, £64 l.ls. lid ; Provincial Government grant, £50 : total, £224 18s. lOd. Expenditure : Forming roads, £'55 18s. 7d. ; bridges and culverts, £<)2 12s. 4d. ; other works, £o'l 9s. Cd. ; salaries and rent, £14 ; advertising, £4 1». Id. ; sundries, £1 Lit Id. : total, £197 14s. 7d.--On tho motion of Mi. G. Brown, seconded by Mi C Tylden, the leport was adopted. —Mi. Morgan ptopo&ed, "That the rato be according to tho value to sell." — Seconded by Mr. Tjlden, and carried — On tht motion of Mr. McDonald, •seconded by Mr. Holmes, it was decided to levy a rate of Id. in tho £. — The following gentlemen weie nominated u* truuteea : -Messrs. AV. Sharp, C. Tylden, 1. Holmes, W. Jones, A. Brown, T. Hamilton, W. Burn*, A McDonald, 13. Harris, and Diuin^ool. Messis. Walker and Morgan wero appointed scrutineer*. WAITAKEREI EAST. Tha annual meeting of tho ratepayer* of thU district took place on the 22nd inst., at one o'clock, at tho Oiatia Hotel, Henderson's Mill, when Mr. John Kelly was called to tho chair. Sixtaen ratepayers were present. — The minutes of the last annual meeting were read and confirmed, and the balance-sheet as under wai read and adopted :— Balance 30th June, 1875, £15 15a. 2d ; rates collected, £47 10s. 7d. ; amount received from Colonial Government, £34 18s. Ud. : total, £08 4s. 3d. Paid for forming roads, £31 I'M. 9d. ; biidgci and culverts, £4 1 U. ; other works, £G lCs ; collecting rates, £4 l.'n. ; salaries and lent, £1 1(R ; printing aud ad vn tiding, t-i 7s. Johu Smyth, John Freeman, J. Stone, K. J. Vercoo, K. O. Waisley, John Woodward, Jobn Kelley. Mr. Bethell and Mr. Hueston wore pioposed, but declined. Messrs. Bethell and Hueston acted as scrutineers, and the result of tho poll was as follows :— John Smyth, 22 ; John Stone, 22 ; Jt. J. Varcoe, 21 ; John Freeman, 14 ; E. O. Si san; and Koberts weie elected as fenceriewcrs -A vote of thinks to the chaiiman and out going truutoei brought the ratepayers' meeting to a close. —A meeting of the newlyelected trustees wai held immediately after tho above, nt which Mr. John Smyth wai appointed cluiiman of the Board. — Immediately after the close of tho Koad Board meeting, the ssttlers piesunt held a meeting, when Mr. John Kelly was voted to the chair. It was proposed and seconded, and ciuried unanimously, "That the newly appointed trustees do at one* confer with the adjoining Koad Boards on th* necosilty of at once petitioning the Government to extend the macadamising on tha Great North Hond ; showing how \eiy much nettle nient has been retardod owing to tho bud state of tho roads, and that the Ore it North Koad only as yet had about six milei of it formed and metall«d from Auckland.
