CARELESS GUNNERS.
To the Editor : Sir,— In your impression of yesterdaj appears the somewhat staitling announcement that one of the Armstrong guns at the North Head, which was worth a short time ago from £300 to £400, has proved, upon inspection by an oflicer of H M.s. 'Sappho,' to be valuable only as old iron. 1 opine from this that the grooving must be partially or completely destroyed by corrosion. Now, sir, if this damage is to be made good, I would most respectfully ask by whom ? The public debt of the colony already stands at a high figure. In the regular service, should such a thing have occuired in the Field Artillery, the major in charge of the battery would be solely responsible. Should it have happened in garrison artillery, or to a gun of position, the oflicer in charge of the sub-dis'rict (gcncially not below the rank of captain) would be the responsible man. I would suggest that the gun be not replaced, until its custodians have learned something relative to the care of rifled ordnance. — 1 enclose my card, and beg to subscribe myself yours, &c, II. .A.
