TELEGRAPHIC NEWS. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

G li AHAMSTOWN, Saturday. Citv op London*. —Retorting for the City of London took place this evening, after a fortnight's run, with a force of 40 head of stampers, at the Kuramii battery. The yield Was SGl^oz. gold. The return is scarcely so good as previous averages, but it is a highly remunerative one, notwithstanding the many expenses which have recently been incurred. j Queen of Beauty. —The fortnightly retorting for the Queen of Beauty Company also took place this oveiling, at the Company's own mill and also at Bull's. At noither was there a full fortnight's work, for the Company's mill was at a standstill for two days, while the boiler was undergoing inspection, aud during the first week's crushing there was not sufficient water for the whole force of Bull's mill. The returns are : Company's battery, 289oz.: Bull's battery, 276oz. Mwt. This will pay a good dividend. Queen of the May. —It was intended that there should have been a retorting for the Queen of the May, at Bull's battery, today, but as it lias been determined to make the cleaning up a complete one at this mill, the retorting will not be completed until Monday. 1'he manager has now engaged the Herald battery, recently vacated by the City of • London, and will employ the full force of it from Monday next. Exchange. —Steam will be got up on the hoisting engine on Monday, for the purpose of raising a parcel of rock from the No. I reef, which has been broken out by the tributers. The. parcel will be a considerable one, and will afford a good trial of the quality of the reef. Manukau. —A nice parcel of specimens eamo to hand this forenoon from the branch leader at the foot-wall side of No. 3 reef. The quantity was not large, but the quality wa9 good. The retorting for this Company will take place next week. Ashley. —A trial parcel of 18 tons from the Ashley claim, which has been crushed for the tributers, yielded an average of an ounce to the ton. Alburnta. —The gold return is not yet to hand, retorting having been postponed until Monday, when the yields from both batteries —the Moanataiari and the Company's ownwill be to hand. * The probable yield is 200oz. Loxo Drive. —Retorting for the Long Drive has also been postponed until Monday. The return will be '» very handsome • one. Ci-kl. —There has not been much stone broken down recently, birt gold shows freely in the faces and 111 the stone taken out.' There have not been many rich specimen!) during the last few days, but the men have been chiefly employed stripping quartz, and, when they break this, there will probably be some good patches met with. The whole of the buildings will be constructed of brick and cement. The hospital will contain 112 beds, and that number will entitle the Wellington hospital become recognised as a hospital having theTntmber of beds required by the examining Board of the United Kingdom, and which will enable young men to commence their studies for the medical profession in New Zealand instead of having to go to England. The hospital w ill be situated a little beyond the lunatic asylum. The artillery had again to postpone the firing for colonial prizes in consequence of wet weathei . _

Bank, C0R0MANDEL, Saturday. Neptune.—Started sending good parcel of stuff to the Nil battery. A fair yield expected. Cm* of Auckland.—Some remarkably good stone has been taken from this mine during the week, and a good show still left in face At a meeting of the shareholders last night it was resolved .to put claim into a company, which was accordingly done, and Mr. H\ Harrison appointed legal manager. Golden Point —The manager continues to take out some good stone from the leader whenever it is broken down. Crushing for this Company will likely start during the week. City ok Cork.—This mine, which has been for some time untouched, is likely once more to start. The City of Auckland leader lias been traced thr ough the ground, and, it is hoped, may be picked up without much trouble. Tho gold deliv ery for the month has not equalled anticipations. This is greatly due to the scarcity of water at the batteries. The tallowing is the yield from tho various mines which have crushed :— Golden Point, 3f>oz.; Three Brothers, 5Soz.; Main's Claim, 53oz. ; City of Auckland, 185oz. ; Tokatea, lOOoz.; sundries, 40oz; total, 474oz. Royal Oak.—The manager reports : — There is very little news to report from your mine for the past week. The No. 1 is still yielding a few pounds of specimens and picked stone, and as yet the leader has every appearance of carrying gold to the snrface. There is not much change in the nature of the ground, and although every stopo gets nearer the surface the ground still continues hard, which prevents any great progress being made. I have on hand about 20 tons quartz in paddock, and about 50lb. specimens and picked stone.—A. Witchell. Tokatea.—There is no news of importance to report from the mine since my last. We have been getting a little gold from stope in Siege of Paris level. Bennett's battery has started to crush, so we may expect paddock of stuff from this level to be put through soon. Gold continued on stope in Peep o'Day leader for a distance of about 30ft., but I cannot send quartz to mill from this or All Nations' leaders, until we get timber and erect shoots. Yesterday T sent to mill about 2001bs. picked stone.—Robert
