THE CUSTOMS REVENUE.

The return of the Customs revenue collected at the several porta of New Zuaiand during the quarter ending December 31 last, 1a published in the Xt v Zmluinl (Uaillo of the 29th January. 'We revenue derived from spirits was £77,GG3, as compared with JE6S,2O8 in the corresponding quarter of 1872. Iu the case of cigars the increase Was proportionately greater. During Ingt quarter the amount of duty collected iu tins article was £4,176 as compared with £2,934 in the December quarter iu 1872. In tobacco the figures were : last quaiter, £25,888 ; in the December quarter of 1872 £23,780. In tea the increase was also large, the collected duties being respectively £IG,G48 and £14,440. In suf.arand molasses the increase was considerable. Last quarter these articles yielded the Customs a revenue £30,728 as compared with A'27,463 in the corresponding quarter of 1872. When ai tides of luxuty no into consumption at such an increasing ratio, it bespeaks plainly of a comfortable condition amongst the woi Icing classes. The revenue collected during the last; quarter was £280,748, as compared with i210,S07 m the corresponding quarter in 1872.
