BISHOP CROKE AND THE MAYOR.
To the Editor : Sir,— Bishop Croke haa thought proper to attribute motives to me in making an explanation at the annual meeting of the Neglected Children's Home on Thursday evening last, from which, however, I think the public will exonerate me. The words used, at the request of the secretary and a member of committee were (in reply to a regrot expres8ed made by Mr. Main that some of the clergy or laity of the Roman Catholic Church were not nominated on the Committee of Management) correctly reported in the Cross as follows -.—The Chairman stated the committee had invited tho Catholic clergy to be represented in the management, but that a letter had been received from Bishop Croke declining to be connected with it. It is to be regretted the Bishop did not read your report before addressing you. If, however, this statement is incorrect, I have no doubt the secretary will satisfactorily explain matters. — lam, Ac, P. A. Philips May 18, 1S73.
