MANGA WAI ATTEMPTED BURGLARY.

Afhw days ago an attempt was made to cairy ofT several articles fiom the premises of G. Lcnnell, Esq., of the Kiii/ira Station, by au individual who tried to gam access to the residence duiiug the absence of the family, who woic fiom home. The particulars are as follow : — Mr. and Mrs. Lennell had left home for a day or two, leaving ! their t.imily m chaige of their ser\ant maid. About the middle of the foienoon of Thmsday last a auspicious-looking chai actor ai lived at the house, and knocked at the dooi, which was opened by the girl in charge. 1 he man asked to be admitted, which lequest the girl refused, and clo ed the door. The man then walked away, and was seen by the gnl to enter a building close by, occupied by Air. Lcnnoll's wmkmcn, who were at woik some distance from the house The ynl, with gicat presence of mind and equal daiing, led a dog by the chain to the door of the building, and, confronting the mean rascal, demanded of him what business hchadthoie. At the same moment, disoovoiiug that thy man was about to carry off ac\eial at-tieles of clothing, she requested him to put them down and go away The man lephed that he would heather brains 111 if she did not move off. At this |tincture the gnl urged the dog foiwaid. The rufliau, seeing the feiocity of the animal, immediately "made tracks," and disappeared in the scrub, and has not been hcaid of since. The noble heroism of the girl, under such circumstances, will be acknowledged by your leadeis, her age being only 14 years. The person suspected is well known in these parts: he is a chaiacternot much addicted to hard w oik, but prefers being on tramp, and continually oscillating between tins place and the Oruawharo. Later on tho saint, day hi-, tiaeks weie observed on the road leading to the latter place. For the past week a notice of challenge has been posted at the various places of business, bearing the siguatuio of Mr. J. Andoraon, to the effect that he would back ln<3 horse against any other in Mangawai, to the amount i'f £."), to mil a distance of one mile. Ins hoise to carry 12st. Mr. J. Bow mar readily accepted the challenge, and entered a favountc maie named Kitty against Mr. Andei son's Black Boy. The raco came off on Satin day, the 2Sth ultimo, on the line of road opposite the Post-ofh'co. Mr. Bowmar's kitty was tho lirst to put in an appearance, in charge of Mr. S. Mooney, senior, who has for the past week had her in a course of tiamiug ; and, judging by the excellent condition she was iu, much credit is due to Mr, Mooney. A little before noon the horses walked to the staiting point, the course having picviously been measured. Mr. Lennell kindly acted as starter, while Mr. Uye discharged the duties of judge. A capital stait was made— both horses getting away splendidly Owing to the windings and uneven nature of the course a good view of the entire 1 im was difficult to obtain ; however the horses kept well together for a (jtiailer of the distance. The capabilities of both horses were sorely tested as they nearcd the winning post, a steep descent lying between them and and the winning post. Mich rider did his best to encourage the horse he rode, but the superior qualities of Kitty enabled her to pass tho winning post a good length ahead of her opponent. Tho qualities of other hoises were tested in runs over the same course for various sums, from 5s. to €2. A large coucoui3o of people were pie<>ent,am1 a good feeling prevailed throughout. — [Conespondent ]
