The brigantine Emulous, from Oamaru, arrived in harbour yesterday morning. Captain Patterson reports having left on the 26th, and had light southerly winds to the East Cape, which was lonnded on Thursday. Thence for two days had a strong S.W. gale. Passed (Juvier Island on Sunday last. Light airs and calms till arrival. The ship City of Auckland was berthed at the wharf yesterday. She will commence to load for London to-day. ~ The a. s. Roweua took her departure for Mangonui and northern ports yesterday afternoon. _ The s.s. St. Kilda, from Whanganui, arrived in the Manukau yesterday morning. The 3.5. Wonga Wonga will leave for Sydney this morning. The brig Albion, from Newcastle, with a full cargo of coals, arrived in harbour early yesterday morning. The brig left on the 23rd, and has had v&riable winds throughout. The ships Queen Bee and City of Auckland both hauled alongside the wharf yesterday morning. The s.s. JRowena took her departure for Northern ports, with a full cargo and a number of passengers, yesterday afternoon. The Keera may be looked for on Thursday , next from Southern ports. i The great merit of Captain Peiry's aaticollision dial is now generally recognised,' and he waa justified m the, display of enthusiastic belief in the efficacy of his plan which he made at the meeting of the Royal Society on Monday night. But there is one thing which (Capiajp P,erry cannot do — find a substitute for vigilance. It is quite true that if the commander of the • Sussex ' had had one 6f the dials on board, and had used it intelligently, his ship would not have been wrecked! But it is equally true that if^tbe captain had used ordinary precaution' without a dial the result would have heap the same. , The me ( rit bf Captain Retry 's invention lies in -its being an aid to vigilance, not injsupplying. a-subatitute for ifc. A careless captain will nob be prevented from throwing- *way--his-«hip~no 'm»tior"h<Wex!cellent the &ppliaiic63 s in:l,y;b,ejby which he is ■unrounded?— X&iftboixrno-Leader? - >' *-> !
