MINING NEWS. Grahamstown, Wednesday.
MoAtfATAiAßi.— The big lode that; was struck in thoN. VV. cross-cut No. 3 is being followed, and looks as well as it did on Saturday, with this differeuce : it baa increased in size., Grold is seen in the stone. Tbe question ' of this lode's idontity with No. 1 lode is not yet quite settled, but is likely to be iv the affirmative, although, if it is No. 1, the underlie of the Jattor must have undergone a change. However, No. 1 or not No, 1, the lode will pay for working, and that is the main consideration. A contract has been let to put up a rise out of, the T drive, taking off the N."W. cross-cut at No. 1. This rise is being put op to meet the main shaft, instead of sinking the latter, as so doing would seriously interfere with the work of the upper ; levels of the mine. The size and shape of 1 the rise coinoide exactly with those \ of the shaft, and tho two are calculated to meet to an inch. If they do, Mr. Wright, who surveyed for the work, will have achieved another sucesa. j No. 9 lode is fairly in hand in the cross-cut put in for it from the drive in the small leader mot with in the S.3S. cross-cut No 9. The lode ia of large size, and shows sufficient gold to stamp it as being thoroughly payable. The company is suffering from the want of mora crushing power. From CO to 100 stamps could be employed ; next week 1 the Herald machine will be available, but will not meet the demand for crushing power by onehalf. Inverness. — Five stopes have been opened on the lode above tunnel level, and the rise above there is still being pushed up j the height attained from tunnel level is about 75ft. vertical. A good strong lode is in sight everywhere, and gold occasionally. That it is part of a main shot is a pretty well j established fact, and it ought, as it is traced | upwards, to greatly improve in quality. t Bising on the lode in the Don Pedro side of the ground is in progress, and with encouraging results. The country is improving, and gold can be seen in the vein. Altogether the prospects of the mine are good, and will brighten as soon as the prospecting ! operations talked about commence. A cross- ! cut to prove the large block of ground on ' the Moanataiari Creek side of the miuo ia to ' be put in. \ Windsor Castle.— The lode onthoS.W. j side of the mine 1b steadily improving both j as regards size and quality. 18in. of stone ia now taken, and henco no difficulty is experienced in keepiug twelve stampers going. The crushing looks up famously. Yesterday 60oz. of amalgam were taken off ! tbe plates. GoldenCalf.— Tw>batteries(loBfcampers) have been crushing for the mine at Souters machine since last Monday week, so the quantity of atone put through up* to this morning may be estimated at about 80 or 90 tons. Its value will be pretty nearly ascer tamed this afternoon, when retorting the amalgam obtained from the plates and ripples will be finished. The stamper-boxes were nofc cleaned oub, in order that the crushing might continue uninterruptedly. Mary Ann. — A projoct for working this mine out of the Red Queen shaft is under consideration, and it is to be hoped will come to maturity, as it wonld prove of great advantage to the company. Brunswick Company. — The tributers are sending a parcel of 40 or 50 tons of stuff, to Goodall's machine. It is expected to prova payable. — [Correspondent. ] The Nonpareil. — Sir, — I see Mr. Warmoll has thought fit to give statistics as to voting at last mealing. There are grave doubts in my mind as to accuracy of same, but, the proxy forms being banded luck to holders, there is now no means of checking same. However, presuming they were all correct, Mr. Whitaker'a written opinion was read, and it was therein clearly stated that, to alter any rule of the company,, a majority in number aid value of the whole of the shareholders in the company should vote for ,ifc. This vobe, however, was not obtained. It is a lamentable stato Jf affairs where a sne property like this ia prejudiced by party feeling. The statement of Mr. Warmoll that the directors wish to retain the sweets of office ia simply untrue. I am in a position to state that they are prepared, if necessary, to retire in -.a body. Mr. Warmoll's remarks come with very bad grace. He was chairman at that .meeting, , and acted bo partially that a proposition was;, .made that he should leave tbe chair, when a' 'show of hands (17 against 9) supported the motion. But notwithstanding this Jhe yef used to vacate the chair. I see a meeting 'has been called for the 27th, and I would •urge the shareholders to. attend .to their interests. Let new directors be appointed, land let us amalgamate the differing elements and put an end to the ipscredifcbto stato of our affairs. It appears to, me that the bone of contention is not so much the directory aa ifche salary of the legal manager, coveted by a certain gentleman who was taxed with Bame at the meeting, and who coul& i Ti6t deny* it. Any way surely we are in a position to manage our-affairs without having to trust j them to one who seems to have made a mess pf his oWn, and'.whVis s^ partially. iqc)iiißd. Let us take tKem into., our own hands and remodel the whole concern, and not drift iato law«suifcs.~l am, &c, A Shareholder.
