MINING NEWS. Grahamstown, Monday.

Inverness, — Tbe upper sfcopes of this mine looked well to-day. There were strong indications of a change in the position of the main body of the lode, which is composed of 2ft. of crushing stuff, and has hitherto hugged the foot-wall. Between this band of stuff and the hanging wall there is a band of coiintry Borne 3ft. thick ooutaiuiug a few stringers, whilst between it and the hangingwall, resting on the latter, is a small goldbearing leader 2iu. thick. The main lode i« now slowing for tho hanging-wall, and promises to join the small vein in the course of a few feet further. The coming together of the two can scarcely fail (to improve the general quality of the stuff. Good specimen patches are almost certain to follow. The lower stopes of tho lodo below tunnel level are still yielding good stone. The prospects of the mine are exceedingly encouraging, and presage steady rich yields for months to come.

GooDEtf Calf. — I inspected this mine to-day, and can report a very good show indeed in the JSfo. 2 lode, The section of it thiovm by the slide is being followed to the southward on the hanging-wall side, tho total thickness of the lode from wall to wall being about Bft. The foot-wall side, so far aa proved, is not so rich as tho other, which carries a band of dark blue stone, impregnated with antimony and iron pyrites. There was no copper pyrites in sight, but gold could be 'soon in the very heart of the stone. Good specimen ! stone was broken out on Saturday night and this morning. Tho lode lies flatly, the angle of dip not exceeding SOJeg., and in this respect, and also ia tho general appearance of tho stuff, the lode bears a marked rosemblance to the lode in the (Jure mine. The quality of the stuff will be put to the proof this week — between 30 tons and 40 tons of it .ire to be crushed at the Tr>mway machine. I shall be much mistaken if the yield is not thoroughly payable.

Imperial Orowk Tribute. —The Gordon Hill tiibuters are crv\shing 40 tons of stone at the Kuranui maebiue. Tho stone was t.ikon from the continuation of the old Duke of Magenta leader, which averages lffc. in thickness. There is a large and e.vsily to be worked block of ground immediately available.

United Pumping Association. —At midnight on Saturday full steam pressure »vas for the first time brought to bear upon the ponderous engine by way of a preliminary test. The effect wa3 in. every respect satisfactory. The engine and pump worked smoothly and withont the least vibration or noiao. To use Mr. Errin^ton's own words, "She would be neither heard or felt." The w.iter was merely raised to th • surface, withont b^ing permitted to overflow. But for the late exceedingly wet weather, which has greatly retarded work, everything would now bo ready for a final start. As it is it will take nearly a week to finish the enginehouse, and until the contractors of that job arc oufc of the way working the engine is not to bo thought of.

Mo.vnata.iaui. —The vein in the No. 9 loil>s cross-cnb, tunnel level, is being followed to the eaatword, and meantime driving the cross-cut) ahead has been suspended. A foot or two of (he lode in the above direction has been broken down, and looked well for gold. No question can be entertained about the value of this auxiliary leader, whilst probabilities are all in favour of its improving in quality as the slide is approached. In the opposite direction it strikes for the Inverness mine, the boundary of which is distant only some 50ft. from the cross-cut. Thiire is nothing new to report of the other workings of this mine.

Tara.ru Company. — The main adit level is progressing favourably, having reached the length of 740 ft. It is now in good working country.

Caledonian. — Although last week a return was considerably less than expected, it must be regarded as a good substantial yield forasmuch as the batteries only ran three clays for it, whilst not more than Gcwt. or 7c\vt. of picked stone was treated. When the yield became known this morning the market flattened, and forashorttime there weresellers at £27, with no buyers. But in the course of the day a revival took place, consequent upon a report of a rich find of specimens in the mine, which subsequently received confirmation from tbe manager. The stone was taken out of the specimen lode, towards the Otago, and included a few of as rich spaci« mens as have been seen for many a day. According the battory-managor's report there was enough amalgam on hand on Saturday night to produce 15Ooz. or 200oz. of gold ; so that the week may be considered to have commenced auspiciously, and should terminate in a much larger return than resulted on Saturday.

Yankee Doodle.-- The company's recent operations having proved unprofitable, it was resolved to let the mine on tribute, and tenders to that effect were called for. Today the directors met to open those sent in, the tender of Swanson and party being accepted. The term of the tribute is twelve month. 5 !. The last stuff crushed for this mine yielded about Bdwt. the ton. — [Correspondent.]

CoRoarANDBL, Monday. Specimen Hill. — Driving to cut the leader ia still being carried on, and may bo come wp&n at any moment. According to survey, tho required distance has been reached.

Tite Pride of the Tiki.— Tho low-level contract for driving GOft. is completed in a very satisfactory manner. It is contemplated to continue this level for a further distance for the purpose of intersecting a large reef running across the ground, at a short distance ahead. No. 2 level has been discontinued for the present. Driving on a new reef discoTered about threo weeks ago is being carried on by the contractors of tho intermediate level. This reef is looking remarkably well, and a trial crushing will take place at an early date.

Challenger. — A drive on tbe No. 1 leader has just been commenced from the main level of the Treasury ground. Fu'o tons of stuff will bo sent to the mill in about 10 days, and from the appear, ance of the atone ami prospects obtained a, ! payable return is anticipated. ' I

TVEi,LiKGTONr. — The low level has "been' carried in for a distance of 75f b. through! easy country, and driving along the big reef has been continued for 60ft. The roefr has greatly improved both in thickness' and appearance, the size between the walls being nearly 4£t. It is the intention of the management to continue driving on this reef; and cross-cut through ft every 15ft., and teat its value thoroughly. The work in the low level has been somewhat retarded in consequence of the scarcity ' of good timber, about the claim.

United.— An undergound survey has'just bean completed by Mr. B. H. Beere, for the purpose of ascertaining the best spot \o commence a drive to out the Wellington reef.' An old drive which was put in some three 'months ago and abandoned has been selected as being the most advantageous for proving that portion of the ground, and work is to be started at once.

Pebp t q'D&x,— The leader in the low level: is expected to be met with in a few feet; more, The country is still very, hard and* progress 'stow. Preparations are also being, made for' sloping out the old Swedish Grown; leader. A crushing will in all probability take place in three or four weeks' time.

The Persian— which adjoins the Masonic i on the Paul's Greek side of the range — are opening out the reef out in the lo# level. Itii the intention .pfith'e (management to drire along this reef for a considerable distance, ! expected to come * upon the Veef found inlift© ' upper lesel^and'-running at right' angles with. | this one in about 70ft/" 1-*1 -* * . . „ i
