TAPU. June 1.

The erection of tlie telegraph between Grahamstown and Coromandel is proceeding rapinly, posts and wire being setup for a considerable distance beyond Bastings. The dispute with the natives between Tapu and Coromandel is a trivial one, being simply the matter of a few pounds, which the Government will be compelled to pay. Meantime the posts are being erected from both ends, thus leaving the disputed territory to the last. The firewood tramway has once more been surveyed from the township up to Golden Point, and I hear that the Waioma people are about to petition Government for a sum of money so as to commence a similar undertaking lor a firewood trade at that place. — Next week fche Gentle Shepherd Claim commence a crushing of over 100 tons. A few days ago one of the shareholders showed me some of the richest specimens I have seen, and in spring an effort is to be made for putting in a low level, which would be 300 ft. be'ow their present workings, and about I,oooft. below the crown of the hill. Hitherto all mining here has been mere surface scratching, each pettifogging little claim putting in its own drive or shaft, such abortive attempts invariably encing in impecuniosity of the pocket. The proposed tunnel is to be on the co-operative system, and, if properly carried out, cannot fail to be a lucrative speculation to all concerned. A sample of the gold, with description and drawing of the ground, have been sent to the commercial metropolis of Scotland, and I hare no doubt but assistance for carrying on the work will be procured from that quarter. — This week Mr. Buokland's machine was prevented from crushing in consequence of a series of landslips necessitating the removal of a portion of the fluming farther into the hill : the alterations however are expected to be finished to-day. The Hope' machine is still pounding away, and this orushing is expected to turn out much better than last, which was rather indifferent. — The, Cornucopia, late Crown .Jewels, is again' t iken ui>, and ■ work in one or two ot'aer claims will shortly be resumed.— I observe that considerable dissatiafaotion exists regarding the New Zealand Mining Report, recently pnblished by .Government. FtF t preparing the Mining Beport of the United States of America, the Commissioner of Mining Statistics sends circulars to the v.rious •uperintandents of mines, millowners, amalgamists, &o. t requesting themfo fill up certain forms regarding the methods *ndprogre«a of the various mining departments. Such circulars are colleoted about the end of the' year, and in the month of i p ll the mining report for the previou« year u published. ; < Thus in April last thrreport for 1871 was wived,— {Correspondent,;}
