MONETARY AND COMMERCIAL. Southern Cross Office, Friday evening.

The Arrivals during the past week have been rather more numerous than usual. The chief imports of general merchandise were those per 'City of Adelaide, 1 whioh brought 1,351 bags potatoes, 4 boxes tobacco, 130 matß sugar, 50 cases castor oil, 60 case* schnapps, 670 bags maize, 718 eases I rait, and 60 chests tea, besides other miscellaneous cargo. Th« admitted scarcity of potatoes has induced large importations, much «f those landed being of very inferior quality. In addition to the consignments per *City of Adelaide,' and mentioned above, 155 tons have been received per 'Scotia,' fromi Warrnambool. The supply in the market at present is said to be equal to two months' consumption, but prices have declined very little, the high -rates ruling elsewhere, and the great loss sustained by shippers by rot on the voyage, rendering it. impossible to offer at a low figure. Prices realised daring the week at auction have been from £6 10s to £7 per. ton. At such * high price, consumption will to a great extent diminish, and until good samples can be procured and offered at a lower figure importing potatoes.will be attended with considerable rule to the. merchant. Bread.

stuffs continue tolerably firm, and we have no alteration to make upon the prices quoted last week. We untice by Australian u< rices that Adelaide prices have weakened about 6d per bushel. There is not much probability of a further advance, aa home and Califoniian crops a»-e reported aa looking excellent. It is stated that a better yield ia anticipated in California ibis year than for in.my years past. We have heard ifc stated upon good authority that the market with new wheat will open in California at about 3? Cd per bushel. Of course this is morn speculation. Yesterday's quotations of wheat, flour, and produce, at the various I Southern ports, will be found in our telegram column. At present we continue to quote Auckland flour at the mills, from £15 to i £17 ; Adelaide, £17 ; Canterbury flour, £14 to £15 ; Canterbury wheat, 5s 6d to 5s 9d ; Adelaide, 7s to 7s 6d per bushel. The receipts since Friday laat have been 455 tons wheat and 147 tons flour. A large quantity of oats have oome to hand, amounting in the aggregate to about 10,000 bushels. The prices fetched at auction for parcels offered were 2s lOd to 3s 2d per bushel ; feed barley, 8s 3d ; maize, 4a 6d. There have been considerable importationa'of provisions, which are worth in trade lines the following quotations:— Good samples of Canterbury cheese, 6d ; hams and bacon, 3d to 9d:; butter, 7d to 8d; lard, 2j|d to 3d, From the auction sales of the week we select the following quotations for merchandise disposed of under the hammer : — Hawkins'e|bulk jams.S^d to 5Jd; Peacock's tin jams, 7s yd j soap, 18s 3d ; spioe, la 5d ; lemon peel, 71b. tins, Is 3d ; cornflour, each 141b., 7sd ; chocolate, each 141b.» la 4d ; Colman'a tin mustard, lib., 5s 6d per dozen ; sardines, 12s Gd j salmon, 13s ; castor oil, 5s lOd ; blue, 9Jd ; sugar, 4jd to ofcd 5 tea, 2s 4d ; beef, 42s per barrel j kerosine, 2s Bsd ; bouedust, £7 10s. We notice amongst the exports by the s.s. 'Hero' for Sydney 234 biles flax and 175 cases gum. We believe the consumption of our local fibre is increasing in the Australian market, and hope there will soon be a considerable trade in this fibre between the two colonies, which will serve to counterbalance to some extent the large imports into New Zealand from her sister co'onits. Messrs. S. Cochrane and Son report that at their furniture sale to day there was a large attendance, and spirited bidding. The following are the prices realised :—'Hairseated chairs, 19s; hair-seated sofa, £3 7s 6d , walnut bookcase, £7 2s 6d ; cedar chest drawers, £7 ; mahogany dressing mirrors, £2 123 6d to £2 15s ; gilt mirrors, £4 ; register grates, £3 to £3 17s 6d ; kitchen range, £4 3s ; marble-top wasbstnnd, £2 2a 6d ; revolver, £2 15s ; time-piece, £1 10s ; wax flowers, £1 7s ; inlaid table, £3 ; engravings, 16^ to £2 2s 6d j painting, £1 17s 6d.
