MINING NEWS. Graham town, Wednesday.
UNA.-r-The main lode ba«, not^yet been intersected in the low level} but what there is of it iv sight looks' most promising. The lode ,ia ..evidently very, much larger than it was in the upper workings. ' Excluding the bunch of stringers" first met with, 10ft. of stuff, quartz and tufa, has already been' cub into, without the slightest sign of the foot-wall appearing. Those good indications of gold, antimony, pyrites, and copper, are to be seeu in patches, whilst gold itself is not wanting, albeit not in payable quantity. Last night, the single-stamp battery of the company's machine .was set going ou the stuff,, and .this ■ morning there was a light selv age of amalgam in the plates. The manager intends to crush the whole of the stuff that comes out of the section of the lode in the tunnel, and so give it a fair trial. I am decidedly of opinion that payable gold is close a3 hand, much nearer than 100 ft., the estimated distance of the Pride of Karaka shot of gold. No change demanding coniment on my part has occurred in the upper workings of the mine, excepting that, as the stop es approach the floor of the May Moon old workings, the lode stuff improves in quality. Ihe current fortnight's return of gold is likely to be in excess of the last one. Otanuißlock.—TheGolden Phoenix Company's machine commenced crushing yester- , day for the shareholders of a claim recently taken up near the machine. The prospects arej tolerably good, two quartz veins having been opened—one a small leader bearing specimens, the other a large lode some 12 feet thick, containing a little gold. Ifade-, 1 quate crushing power wore available it is thought that this lode coul6 be.made to pay well. The Phoenix machine has only one battery of four stamps, and is merely suitable for trial crushing^. Alhambra. —Anew claim so named, and of nearly seven acros in extent, has been taken up next to the Queen of the May and Qu,eon of the Thames mines, on the Waioki«raka spur. A meeting of the shareholders was held on Monday night, when it was decided to form a company, with a capital of £s,oooinas" many shares, 10s. paii up on each. Messrs. D.Tookey,E. Macdonuell, and Muir were elected provisional directors, and Mr. E. Wildraan legal manager. A shaft bas already been sunk 50ft., and is to be continued by contract. Criterion Machine. —This machine resumed work yesterday, after a somewhat long spell of idleness. One battery started for,the West Coast Mine, and the stuff is showing up well for a good return. It crushes slowly—not more than four tons having passed through the gratings up to this morning, when 1240z. of hard-squeezed amalgam were taken off the plates. The stuff bids fair to yield 3oz. to the ton, exclusive of specimens. There are about 30 tons of stone to be treated. Two batteries also started for the Waitemata Company, upon stuff taken out of the so-called new leader in the bottom level. The plate show indicates a yield of about) loz. to the ton, exclusive of picked stuff, of which there is about 701b. iv hand. The two-stamper battery ia crushing a trial parcel for the Colonial, late Golden Lion, mine. The plate show is poor. United Pumping Association. —Mr. ErringLon is making grand progress with the work he has iv hand. By the end of this week the heavy drawing lift will be in position, and then pumping is to be stopped, and dismantling the old gear commenced. Eureka. —A tribute of all that section of the mine above the 200 ft. level has been let to Robaon and party at 374 Per cenfc. upon the gross yield. These terms are very favourable to the company. The tribufers will commence work as soon as they obtain formal possession of the mine. Lion Company. —The amalgamation of this mine with the Red, White, and Blue is under serious consideration, and is likely to be accomplished, to the great benefit of both companies. Negotiations have also been opened with the .Kuranui Hill Tunnel Company with the view of extending the tunnel to the Lion boundary. This simply means the opening of levels in the Lion ground at over 300 ft. from the surface, and also ensuring admirable fajilities for breaking out quartz and sending it to the mill. Coliban Company. —The winze from the upper level is down 27ft., and carries a good strong lode that shows gold. The winze is going down to meet a low level that it is expected will be driven from the Windsor Castle tunnel, at a depth that will command nearly every fathom, of the leader contained in the mine. Arrangements for driving this level are being made with the Wiuclsor Caatle Company. The leader after leaving the Coliban passe 3 directly into the Windsor Castle ground.— [Correspondent.] Coromandel, Wednesday.
CLAIMS SURROUNDING DRIVINa CREKK. The Yon Tempsky. — This lease, which is the first claim on the Driving Creek, has an areaof 32 men's ground, and runs within a few yards of the Government tramway. On my visiting the ground yesterday, I found the main tunnel workings had been carried during the last fortnight about COf fc. Mr. Began, the manager, informed me he will very likely have to carry the present level about 250 ft, before cutting either the Scottys leader or the Kapanga reef, -which has been traced right through the company's works, running north aud south and dipping to the west. The manager keeps three shifts regularly employed, bat has not that amount of progress he should desire owing to the difficulty of obtaining timber. Black Hill. — The ground, which is at the foot of the Tokatea range alongside the Government tramway, within a few yards of the New Zealand Company's Battery, ia at present worked on a cross drive, which has been carriod a distance of about 30ft. Operations are being pushed ahead, but there isjnothing special to mention regarding the prospects of the company at present. The Cdpid.— This company's ground is also close to the New Zealand battery. During the last week wprk has been started in the main tunnel, which is now in about 20ffc. The ground is favourably apoken of, and, from its proximity to other good workings, I have no doubt it will soon prove a favourite investment. The Working Miners.— This ground adjoins the Nil Desperandum Company's mine, and ia one^ of those which have been before the public prominently for some time. Yesterday afternoon I went, in company with the manager, Mr. Joseph Parkes, over its workings. The main tunnel has been carried .in to a distance , of about 220 ft., and well timbered the whole way. At about 166 ft.' -the reef was come upon, and continued up to the present working, where it has become remaikably small. The- labour from .the beginning has been through earth of a mullocky sandstone class : very good small patches of stuff have been come across, "ahcV about 15' toils' stacked in the paddock,4which will- .very likely show a good yield of' 'fine gold. At the point now reached the workmen appeaar to be close on ft good body of stone} which will bring them out'bf that doubtful gritty stuff lately brougbt to grass } iand very" likely establish the permtfn'enoy of a mime which many expect such good prospects from. The manager is going to erect a shoot to connect the mine with the low level, of the Nil'Despferandum Compapy/a ground,' and from its proximity to the New I Zealand Company's battery will* "considerably' lesien the expense when the manager" begins forwarding stuff for crushing. i ,-. •, i <„; , ( opposite the Golden Point Company's "frouncC 'MrT "Wallace;" the™ "manager, j has carried jtfce ,ftojl#ngs & |o/?|bout 130 ft. ; At -about 150 ft. more, tae. same level on the j pDDpflito Bide,s'?vhich.ha3 been, carried about '"480ft' , wUl'bemet wit^apdtK^cbntmji'nication ; thoroughly eatablisned in the lower work- ! sJn^rAw^^*^ -&\? q - d °*T n on>#ie. Tokatea. Company. — Mr. Home, the manager, informs me that he lodged, yesterday afternoon, 181oz. 7dwt. of {jold fro"m, this mine with the Bank of New Zealand. Bismarck and Sxeqe of Pabis. — At the directors' meetiag, yesterday afternoon, which lasted nearly three hours, a resolution was agreed to for calling an extraordinary (general maeting of shareholders to consider the terms of amalgamation offered by the Bismarck, and which was not accepted by the Siege of Paris directors.— [Correspond dent.]
