MAURITIUS.

We have received copies of the Port Louis Commercial Gazette and of La" Sentinelle de Maurice to April 1. The chief items of news relate to the labour question. A commission haB been appointed to inquire into the truth of sundry charges which have been raised against the planters of the colony, the Protector of Immigrants, the Police Department, the Magistrates, and the Council, by a certain pamphleteer. ."It will be the business of the Commission to see how far these charges are founded in truth j whether flogging is, or was at any time, systematically resorted to in the Immigration DepOt, as a means either of maintaining discipline, or of satisfying the ferocious propensities of the Protector ; whether the planters systematically and relentlessly ill-use their labourers, beatiug them, defrauding them, aud oppressing them by every possible means ; whether the Magistrates and the Protector, violating their duties, violating their oaths, shamelessly connive at the deeds of infamy said to be committed by the planters ; whether the Legislature favours- and abets, or did at any time favour and abet, all such alleged fraud and oppression. If any of the counts of the long indictment filed against the colony be proved, it will be the duty of the Commission to pass judgment accordingly ; and, not improbably, their judgment will be follqwed up with recommendations as to the course to be followed in future. "
