COROMANDEL: STEPS FOR THE ERECTION OF A HOSPITAL.
Yesterday (Monday) afternoon a most influential meeting of the principal settlers of Coromaudel took place at the Coromandel Hall, to form a committee, adopt measures for obtaining money towards building a hospital, and for making temporary arrangements in the meantime to secure hospital treatment to deserving cases. Amongst those present were Major Keddell, Resident Magistrate; Rev. Thomas ScoU ; J. (Jadman, Esq., M.P.C. : Dr. Payne, M.Ii.C.S. ; Mr R. Kelly, Tokatea Company ; Messrs. Woollams, Glover, Allen, O'Neill, Caher, Berry, Douglas, Lloyd, Wright, Whitaker, FitzGibbon, Ross, Stott, and others. Major Keddell was unanimously voted into the chair, and explained the object for which the meeting had been called, the necessity there existed for hospital accommodation for these persons who wero unfortunate in meeting with accidents, and hoped the resolutions •about to be proposed would bo acceptable to all. He called upon Mr. Cadman to address the meeting. — Mr. Cadman then moved, "That a committee, consisting of Messrs. Keddell, Cosgrave, Keary, Berry, Woollams, Douglas, Cramp, R. Kelly, Glover, and the mover, be appointed to devise the best means of founding a hospital, to make temporary arrangements for accidents to miners, with power to add to their numbsr, and five to form a quorum." — Mr. Prescott seconded the motion. —Messrs. Kelly, Glover, and Ross made some observations iv support of the resolution, which was put to the meeting and carried unanimously.— Mr. ltoss got a resolution carried by a majority for the clergymen of the various religious denominations in and about Coromandel to be ex officio members, the Rev. \lr. Scott believing, if clergymen did no other good than assist in forming a quorum, it would be no harm putting them on the committee.— On the motion of Mr. P. Woollams, it was unanimously resolved that Mr. Keary be requested to perform the duties of secretary pro tern. A conversation ensuod about the holding of the first meeting of the committee. Mrs. Allen has now in hand and promised £102, the list being headed with a donation of £10 10a. from Mr. Thomas Morrin, of Auckland. Mr. Woollams and others gave substantial subscriptions, and guaranteed haudsome amounts in case the erection of the hospital was commenced. Mr. Allen took much pains in getting up the meeting, and his wife deserves every credit for her activity and charity in collecting such a handsome amount
HOTJCL ACCOMMODATION. The scanty hotel accommodation which has been much felt for some time past at Coromaudel is being gradually remedied by the erection and extension of first-class hotels. The latest one opened is that of the Star and Garter, the energetic proprietor being Mr. M. K. Samuels, who, in the arrangements made for those who patronise him, has spared no expense in making his hotel a desirable place for travellers and visitors. From hia advertisement, which appears elsewhere, it will be seen oheapnesa and comfort will be accorded to those who favour him with their support. His extensive premises are a credit to Coromandel, and we wish him all success. — [Correspondent.]
