DISCUSSION ON WHEAT-GROW-ING.

TnE May meeting of the Port Albert Association was held at the house of Mr. Partridge. There was a good attendance. The President;, Mr. W. Hefford, occupied the chair. After the routine business was disposed of, and some discussion had taken place respecting the expediency of making a definite arrangement at an early date, as the nature of the case would admit, for the conduct of the 1873 Agricultural Exhibition, Mr. R. Nicholson read a paper on " Wheatgrowing." Therein he treated of the best kinds of soils for the purpose, and what preparation they Bhould undergo ; of the several varieties of wheat j what means to adopt for the prevention of rust ; of the utility of employing the Cambridge roller ; and various other particulars relative to successful wheat culture. A long discussion ensued, during which it was elicited that the best preparation of soil, &c, had at times failed to ensure a crop, which, had turned out very good iv other cases with scarcely any preparation. One settler atated he had this last season reaped some 35 bushels off one acre and a quarter. —At the June meeting of the Association, Mr. G-. Plummer will read an essay on " Competition versus Co-operation." — [Correspondent.]
