MINING NEWS.

G R ahamstown, Wednesday. Quebec— It has been decided to resume work iu this mine, which for some time has been standing idle. The ground stands well to catch any oilshoots from tho Queen of Beauty lode, or leaders from the Sailor Pi ince seam. A lodehas been opened in it, and pi oved to contain gold, and as ib strikes tho City of London ground itis to befollosved for 100ft. A contract for the work has been lot, but the : contractors have not yet commenced operations. Una. — I again examined the low level of this mine to day. More quartz lias come in, there being a strong band of it in the face 1 of the tunnel. I am inclined to think that ' it is tho lode, but the manager, Mr. Nicholl, 1 holds to a contrary opinion. Assuming it to be the lode, the fact of its wearing so poor an appearance is in no wise discouraging inasmuch as the tunnel was not driven straight for the shot of gold that lies some 40ft. or 50ft. to the eastward, and will have to be sought for in a T drive. I hold no doubt of the ultimate result being other than favourable to the best interests of the company. Curb.— I inspected tho mine this morning, and failed to detect any chance for the worse in the lode, Between the walls it is fully 8ft. thick, and every particle of the stuff is sent to mill. The battery plates were again cleaned yesterday, and the amalgam squeezed ; the result, including what was obtained tho other day, being 514oz. A portion of the blankets were treated ; but the greater portion has yet to pass through the berdans, whilst, tho boxes have not been touched. About 50 tons of stone had been crushed, therefore tho yield so far bids fair to exceed 2oz. to the ton. Crushing still continues. Smiling Beauty. — The shaft h,i3 been cleared of the accumulated water, and sinking deeper is proceeding, to ascertain if the blue clay is part of the main country, or merely a layer above another drift. Tho upper drift leaks at a great rate through the puddling. Abraham Lincoln crushing was com menced to-day, at the Sir Walter SScott machine. — [Conesj on lent.] The Coliban.— The sinking of tho winzeis progressing well, and the reef shows gold very frequently. The Utago. —The manager is now driving on the cross leader which was found some time ago striking into the main lode. The stone shows gold pretty frequently, and it appeals to be well distributed through the quartz. The Moa Tribute —The Moa Company have let their mine on tribute on very reasonable terms for a period of two years to an energetic tiibute party, who are now working the mine systematically. T e St. Lawrence and Nkvada Companies. — A special meeting of the sharehollers of the St. Lawrence and Nevada Goldmining Companies was held yesterday, at the Mechanics' Institute, Queen stieet, when the final arrangements for theamalg.mation of the companies were discussed and settled. — Advertiser. Cohomandel, Wednesday. There is very little mining news stirring to-day. Meetings are almost daily being held to take into consideration the question of forming additional goldmining companies, but whether these speculations will pr>>\e remunerative or otherwise time can onl} decide. The ushering into existence of so many companies I do not think will at all benefit the district ; ou the contrary, it would bo mere pleasing to witness more real work, and less nominal occupancy of lands that are certain to be abandoned beforo the winter is over Wood's Point Goldmining Company. — A meeting of persons interested in the formation of a company for a piece of ground ad joining the Woiking Miners was held yester day evening, at the office of Messrs. Kennan and O'Brien, when arrangements wer<5 completed for commencing work. Messrs. Brodie, Ninnis, Ames, Scanlan, and Michael Hennelly were elected directors, ana Mr. Thomas Kennan legal manager. The prospects of the company are favourable, and the management commences with £100 in hand to the credit of the company. I have been informed that the legal manager of the Coromandel Beach Goldmining Company (Registered) has forwarded to the Warden an objection against tho registration of the "Coromandel Foreshore Goldmining Company," on the ground that the names are so similar as to hs liable to mis lead purchasers of the stock in those companies, and also on the ground that the Coromandel foreshoi e proper is held and mined upon by the Coromandel Beach Goldmiuing Company (Registered), and not by tlie Foreshorc Company. Purchasers of stock in the various goldmining companies, established here aud resident at Auckland, should exercise care in ascertaining before purchasing that the persons offering scrip for sale are bona fide holders, as I know that, in one office alone here, five transfers have been forwarded for registration, and none of the sellers' names appear on the company's books. Tramway from Tokatea Range to Kennedy's Bay. — Mr. Montgomery Davies, the successful tenderer for the construction of a tramway from the Tokatea Tramway to the machine site on the Kennedy's Bay side ot the range is pushing ahead with the work. As this tramway will connect the whole of the claims on the eastern side of Tokatea with the battery about to be erected by Mr.Bennett on the Haruaataniwha Creek, its completion will give an impetus to goldmining undertakings in the whole of the district.— [Correspondent.]
