COURT OF PETTY SESSIONS. Tuesday. [Before J. May (Chairman), G-. M. Mitford, andT. Cheesemait, Esqs., Justices.]

Drunkenness. — For this offence four persons were each fined iv tha usual manner. Assault.— Michael Ryan was charged with haviug violently assaulted Constables Brennan and Naughton. — Sergeant Pardy slated that Constable Brennan was at present under medical treatment;, and he would j therefore ask that the prisoner be remanded till Thursday. --The same prisoner was also charged with having destroyed a quantity of clothing, valued at £3. The hearing of this charge was also adjourned till the same day. Attemptm) Suicide. — Augustus Simpson was charged with having attempted to commit suicide on the 11th instant. The prisoner stated that he did not know how he came to do it. It appeared like a dream to him. He was Hot under the influence of liquor at the time. —Ho was ordered to find two sureties of £25 eaoh, and himself in £50, to keep the peace for three months. Breach of Municipal Corporation Act. — William Rainbow was oharged with driving his horse and dray across the public footpath. Sergeant Pardy handed in a memo, from the Mayor, which stated that he had given permission to the defendant. The Bench stated that they were not aware that the Mayor had power to give permission, and therefore fined defendant ss. and costs. — "Richard Ash, for not having a chain attached to the wheel of his dray, was fined ss. and costs. — Richard Kelly, for a similar offence, was fined ss. and costs. Threatening Language.— John Smith was charged by Thomas Jenkin with using threatening language towards him. Mr. Brock for the complainant ; Mr. Thorne for the defence. — The Bench, after hearing the evidence, decided to dismiss the case. Larceny.— John Nagle, alias S. White, alias John Taylor, was charged with having stolen from Mr. Taylors office, Queen-street Wharf, a coat, the property of Thomas Waterworth, containing money, &c, valued at £3. Mr. Bennett appeared for the defence. — The prosecutor identified the coat produced as his. Tha £1 note was missing | out of tho pocket-book. — William Legg, tending the Thameg steamers, deposed to seeing the prisouer going up the wharf with a bundle in his hand. He turned back and went on board the ' Royal Alfred,' and threw the bundle behind the bridge ladder. The coat, pocket-book, &c, produced were the same as in the bundle that the prisoner had. — The Court here adjourned till 2 o'clock. On resuming, the,, steward of the 'Royal Alfred ' deposed to tho prisoner having left the coat with him for a short time.-—Ser-geant Carrigan deposed to having arrested tho prisoner. — Mr. Bennett addressed the Bench, and said thab the prosecution had made a very fatal mistake, viz., no value had been given for ' the r good* stolen. — The

same prisoner was next charged by J. F. Sauuders with having stolen from his shop one pair of trousers valued at 355. Mr. Saundera deposed to having missed the pair of trousors from his shop. — Detective Ter» nalian gave evidence to having found the trousers in the prisoner's box, also a knuckleduster, a slingshot, and a pistol. — The Bench sentenced the prisoner to three months' imprisonment on the ia<st charge, and on the first charge no penalty was imposed. Assattlt. — Peter Langton was again brought up charged with having violently assaulted Fenton Delaney at Riverhead. A doctor's certificate was handed in to the Bench stating that Delaney was too unwell to leave the Hospital to attend the Court. Case adjourned till May 1.
