MINING NEWS, (Grahamstown, Saturday.
Upper Tatjapu. — If less liberality and stubborn perseverance were displayed by the several companies which hold mines in this far-off locahty, doiibts]inight bo entertained of thp value of the discovenes said to have been made there. But this question is being effectually decided by the test of expenditure: no flinching is apparent; calls are paid, and work pushed forwaid, in a manner that indicates an unbounded confidence, on the part of the <<hareholdeis, that the ventures they have embarked in will turn up trumps in the long run. These evidences of faith in the resources of the locality aro the more conclusive, seeing that the obstacles to development are tenfold those which are met with in any other part of the district. — Where there is no connection — or afc the best connection of so exceedingly impel feet character for practical purposes as to be next to useless -between any mining locality and the central depot of commerce of the district of which that locality is a section, the task of developing becomes herculean indeed, and is only to be uudei taken where the chances of success are almost certain. This is the cabc of Upper Tararu; and j when the long-talked-of long-promised road or tramway, as it may happen to result, rendeis the place accessible to ordinary tiaffic, I have no hesitation ia affirming that the effects in a gold-getting source will be as astonishing as satisfactory. A fore-taste o c this has been vouchsafed in this ease of the Vulcan mine, which, however, is not by any means the best thing opened there. Tho adjoining Cyclops gives evidence of much greater nchneps, whilst -the Lowland Lass on the opposite side is also shaping veiy fairly indeed. Then, further up the valley on the Puru side of the rauge, the most encoui aging prospects arc being obtained in the Celt Company's mine. As is the case with tho Lowland Lass, Vulcau, and Cyclops, the lodes in the Celt are of immense size, whilst the gold is veiy evenly distributed through the s one. One lode in the Celt has been cut into for 13ft., and is not yet properly intersected, whilst eveiy dish of stuff washed {jives better or worse prospects. This lode is rogauled as tho backbone of the lange, and is entirely distinct fiom any of the Vulcan lodes. It has been traced by suiface indications for 400 ft. through the Celt giound. Another lode, terraul for contiadistiuction sake "the Black," and also on account of the oxide of manganese it contains, has been opened in another part of the mine, and gold found in the outcrop. A shaft is now going down to test it at a greater depth. A third loilo that demands notice has been found nearer thcPtmi, and is to be opened and tested as soon as convenunt .Adjoining the Celt are the City of Aberdeen, St. G-eorge, and Cheat Noithem mines, all in work, and all goldpi oducing U'l vt;o Compvnv. — A remarkable change for the bettei has oceuned in the No. 1 lode, where the coutiactois aie fidlowing it to the north-cast towaida the Golden Calf boundary. It is in this diiection that the bulk < ! the Utago Mine is .situated, and, as I stated m a former lepoit I thought, the chance of rinding another channel ot golden country there was very good indeed. That channel ha«, in n^y opinion, been touched, and appears moreo\erto be ihe continuation ot that good country which was struck in the mam ciossouc shortly after thr No. 1 lode had been intcisected Nothing mote unpioimsing could j be imagined than the appearance of the lode wheie tho contractors opened upon it the otliei day. It is thuietuio not suipiisniL; that tht- man iger, Mi. Mitchell, should have expujssc I astonishment at tho lemaikablu change of yedteidav. The dead, liungiy, a'ld intensely hard .stud* ££a\e place suddenly to mealy mullock, luto'&eotud l>\ quait/ \ciiis full ol nuucials, amongst which caibonatewf coppei — that unfailing indication of the noble metal \m not wanting The stufl being i >ft,alot of it was soon broken out and sent to tho suiface, -where gold was picked o.i b ot it. In appuaiaiiee and composition it closely rf-enibks the lo.lc stufl of the hi^i ci lovcl-i of the No. 1 lode in tho (Golden Ciown mine, and the lode stufl of No. 2 shot in the Caledonian. A distance of 9ft h.ts hutMi dm en fiom whrre the chaiactev of tho lodo changed, and there is still a growing impiovement in the appea'anco of the stufi". As a little water ooze a through the loof, driving had to be BUS{ ended to-day in order that the ground might be timbered, but will be resumed again on Monday. The lode appears to be iibo' t live feet thick. Between five and six ton- of the better stuff have been grassed. With regard to the workings ou No. 2 lode I have to report that tho lode has been followed close to tho C dedonian boundaiy, wbeic it shows a very nice seam about lSin. thick. A win/6 is to be sunk upon it on the boundary of the two mines. American Eaglf. — This morning the manager brought in lSlb. of good specimens which weie broken out of the lode. Tho latter has vastly improved in the last Gft. of i driving, and is lSm. thick in the face of the | drive. Ne Plus Ultra. — This company has met | with very decided indications of success j dm ing the short time that has elapsed since j work was commenced in the mine. The j leadtr which was opened upon, a»id as I stated in a former report was expected to lead on to the Mulfcutn ia Parvo specimen vein, has been followed 30ft. Gold has been seen in the stone. The vein is about lft. thick. Bright Smile. — I wish to coireet a Misstatement in my report yesterday, and which I discovered had been made when I consulted a plan of the mines. The line of strike of No. 2 lode takes the latter through a corner of the Bird-in-Hand mine and into the City of London, instead of through a corner of the Queen of Beauty ground. — [Correspondent.]
Peter Mitchell, a settler at Whangarei, has §led in the Supreme Court a declaration of insolvency. Heie'sap lication ! A lawyer in Leavenworth, Kansas, recently sued a Mrs Johnson for seventy-five dollars professional charges, which she claims she paid in full. When the case came to trial, while he employed an attorney she said she couldn't afford it at the prices asked, and would defend herself. After the opposing lawyer had exhausted himself, slie spoke a few words to the juty, complimented them on their honesty, and said she expected justice. In a few minutes they brought in a verdict for the defendant, and also presented her with a bouquet. Some men are strangely sensitive. They will get drunk, rave about the streets, yelling like saTages, go home, beat their wives, turn their children out of doors, resist the officers who arrest tkeni, pay a fine before the court, and having made themselves as notoi ions as possible, will slide around the editor and beg aim, with tears in their eyes, not to bring disgrace to their families by mentioning the
