THE LATE REV. MR. HE YWOOD.
A short time ago we expressed regret at the illness of the Rev. Edward Howard Heywood, incumbent of St. Mark's, Remuera. On Satin day morning la^t-, about eight o'clock, the disease from which, he had been long suffering culminated in death. Mr. Heywood was one of those clergymen who are looked upon as being identified with the early histoiy of this province. For many years ho has been the esteemed pastor of St. Mark's, and pi evious to that was stationed at the No;th Shore. He has resided in this province some 20 or 22 years, and at the time of hiB decease was about 48 y9ars of age. He was oulained to the ministry by Bishop •Selwyn, and was for some time connected with St. John's College, when that institution was in full operation. Mr. Heywood wa9 for ten years Clerical Secretaty to the Diocesan Synod, and continued to discharge the duties of that office until the session of that body which has just closed. At the commencement of the session he a3ked to be relieved of the duties, when the Rev. R. Burrows was appointed in his place, Mr. Heywood offering to assist him to the best of his ability. It will be remembered that Mr. Heywood attended the sittings of the Synod daily until the last day on whioh the Hynod met, when he was not able to be presout, and in less than a week afterwards was a corpse. Having been respected by all who knew him when alive, the deceased gentleman leaves many sorrowing friends ; and a wife and three young children remain to mourn the loss of a good husband and father. During the last session of the General Assembly held at Dunedin, Mr. Heywood was attacked by inflammation ; and after a time partly recoveied, but we believe it was a disease resulting from that illness which was the immediate cause of hia death. Iv St. Paul's Church last evening the Right Rev. the Bishop of Auckland alluded in feeling terms to Mr. Heywood's death, and especially referred to his assiduous discharge of the duties devolring upon him as Secretary to the Synod. He mentioned incidentally in his remarks upon Mr. Heywood the recent murders at the South Sea Islands, observing that the Church of the Southern Hemisphere had, within ft very short period, lost three ardent workara iv the good cause. The Key. Mr. Heywood was a Freemason, and the numbers of that body are requested to « ttend the funeral, which will take place this afternoon.
